Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Be gracious

Look, they're going to lay people off, that's simply not going to change.

But what the managers can control is what they say in the layoff meeting. What words they use. What their body language says. The message should be, "we really value your contributions. honestly. and we're really sorry to do this. it's only b/c we have to.

Believe it or not, this is really hard on us." My managers were the opposite: cold, glared at me, made it sound like it was my fault. Never once mentioned that every single written review I ever got was above target. Seized my badge, kicked me out onto the sidewalk. That's what I'm asking Seagate management to not let happen to anyone again.

I will never forget Dave Watkins, in 2000, telling a room of 2500 Seagate engineers, IT professionals, and others that... 'I don't pretend to understand what you're going through because, well, I still have a job.' and then proceeding to lay off just about everybody in the room. Talk about cold-hearted. This made worse by his profiting off the sale of hundreds of thousands of stock options shortly afterwards.

What management should say...

'S---s to be you today, you're fired. Me? I'm going to cash in my options as soon as word of your layoff bumps the share price.'

At least it's honest.

-ispq: seriously ???.... I guess a prime example of the superior strategic planning - and forward-looking vision - of STX's executive team is afforded by your CTO - the "C" must be for clown - who for the past many years has been, repeatedly and unsuccessfully, at the verge of deploying the "advanced" technologies that will "make STX great again": HAMR, HDMR (BPM + HAMR). I'm sure, that if you give your CTO (if not yet RIF'ed) additional funding (a RIF or two worth?) and an appropriate time window (10 yrs ??), he'll deliver...after all, like your CTO has pointed out, STX is ahead of the competition when it comes to the technologies in question (the competition is not wasting resources on such hopeless technologies)...Watch out WD !!

You also lay off employees with tenure because upper management can't make wise decisions for m&a's or day to day operations.
