Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Sour times

I wanted to give my best wishes to folks who underwent the layoffs.

Remember, its not the end of the world and specially if you are on the West coast, jobs are a plenty...

I don't think that the folks who are not impacted by the layoffs are feeling any better...

Its like wading through a minefield with mines going off all over the place...

This is no longer Seagate I used to know...

This is a crushing amount of work and the only reward is: you get to keep your job...

Sad!

I heard the 2-months on the payroll may have to do with MN law regarding a 60-day notification. I haven't researched it; I just heard it. With my previous company for 25 yrs. I volunteered for a RIF, got a 1 yr severance, Did some stuff for a year while wife worked. Found a job (Seagate) better pay, new challenges, I adopted a better attitude.

You guys need to stop being so greedy and think about the shareholders. They come first. Not you.

@1ano

But, do you know what it means to remain on the payroll, but not actually going into the office and doing actual work?

It means that even though you've been RIF'd, and while you're sitting at home relaxing, you're still obligated to answer your phone during that time, and answer questions your remaining co-workers need to ask you so they can perform the duties you used to do.

Yeah, I was laid off in 2015, and I was "still on the payroll" for 30 days. Luckily, I only received 3 calls from former co-workers, so it wasn't too bad.

The layoff this time around is different in the sense that there is a 2 month period where you are still on Seagate payroll, but not actually working. Not sure if that is all across the board or not, but I have heard and talked to a few who got impacted. It is still better than just letting them go on the same day. The impacted folks would have some time to gather their thoughts, stuff or whatever, before the severance package kicks-in. The skilled ones should (I wish them best) get a new (better) job much quickly and the package would serve as a bonus. Having said that, RIFs are not how the company should save money. There are plenty other ways - bring back the 'over-50' voluntary retirement plan, decrease the dividend for shareholders (who's more important?).

Keeping the job: reward or punishment. just think about that for a moment. Not reward.
