Apple's success primarily occurred under the leadership of Steve Jobs, a college drop out who briefly attended Reed College.
Microsoft's success primarily occurred under the leadership of Bill Gates, another college drop out.
Craig Barrett, a Stanford PhD, engaged in ill-advised acquisitions and ran Intel sideways for several years before turning it over to Paul Otellini -- a Cal Berkeley guy who passed on the iPhone. And BK has taken it further downhill, but not because he went to San Jose State 30+ years ago.
An high profile educational pedigree never hurts, but it doesn't imbue anyone with key insights or the courage to innovate one's way out of the x86 box. And a modest education doesn't resign someone to mediocrity. It's what you accomplish on the job that counts, and what you failed to do.
