Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

CurrentOptumEmployee

Overall morale is down in the Optum IT area. More experienced workers are being released as young kids out of college are being hired. In Basking Ridge the overall headcount has remained about the same. The corporate position is "that your position is being eliminated" but everyone knows that is BS. There is almost no effort to move some of these employees into other areas of the company or retrain them in other technologies. The other corporate position is that these young kids are being hired into "areas of need" but while talking to many of them recently they said that they have been sitting around for months with no work. It's clear what's happening here !!!! This company has no clue as to how to run an IT dept. Professionalism is a thing of the past. These young kids walk around with faces buried in their Iphones, come to meetings with baseball caps on. Many of the younger kids are located in the "GOOGLE" area, but better known to the more experienced workers as "Romper Room". I've seen many toy soldiers out in the open on one of the

conference tables. There still remains about 300 consultants (mostly Indian background). If you come into either building in Basking Ridge at any time during the day you would think you were in Bombay. Meanwhile UHG, this week will report probably $45-50B in revenue for Q2 alone. I currently work here but am looking to get out asap as are many of my co-workers.

To wizbang, is this true? -Some employees get severance and some do not ? Anyone else hear about that for other layoffs this year? I thought per hr site info on layoffs severance was paid based on grade level and years of employment.

Depends on your role and position and if you were informed before the event impacts your position. Often if you are being marked redundant but are needed until x date you will get a severance. If you haven't been notified, but have heard, assume you are being released and that has no package, nothing, and any PTO you accumulated is lost. Again it depends on if you are already notified your job is eliminated on x date then any severance is included in with the notification. If there is NOTHING NOTED, then YOU GET NOTHING. UHG is very sleezy about this method, because if they told you you position is being eliminated and they word it in the message to say something like your last salaried day is blah blah. (no severance message) vs your last word day is blah blah and provided you complete your duties through your last work day, then your last salary day is yak yak (date severance is paid through)

Optum Insight is laying off. Word is that layoffs are across Optum and needed in order to meet Wall Street expectations. My take: due to the political uncertainty around the ACA/ACHA/Repeal, providers don't know how to predict their revenue and are not re-contracting Optum products, thus impacting Optum revenue.

We need stability in our health care system. The current administration is creating chaos and not solving the problems.

@2hhp

its by weeks and and also by salary grade.

29+ starts at 11 weeks for up to 3 years and goes up another week every year or two more of service

Does anyone know specifically what the layoff severance package is? how many weeks of pay is covered, does years of service factor in?

I escaped UHG/Optum earlier this year, it was the best move I could have made. Maybe I missed out on a severance package judging by the layoff stories here, but I didn't have to live the last few months in hell working for that company anymore. That is a win in my book.

For anyone who is still there and not looking outside the company, do yourself a favor and start RIGHT NOW. It might be scary, it might be a place you "know", but just remember... UHG/Optum does not care about you, your happiness, or your health.

There really are other companies out there that are run by human beings capable of empathy, respect and compassion who are effective leaders. Guess what, those companies are real and they are also profitable! It is possible to enjoy going to work in the morning, but you have to work up the courage to look.

This is very sad:

There still remains about 300 consultants (mostly Indian background).

We make money here in the States, all of it. Yet, people who make money are mostly foreigners. Corporations have betrayed our country and us, the citizens.
