Been with Sperry/Honeywell 30+ yrs. I am seeing disturbing trend of new promotions where we have many VPs and Directors, and multi levels of Directors reporting to Directors and added layers of mgmt. This happened in '90s before Honeywell tanked. Now worried we've become too top heavy, which can't be sustained. From Phx Aerospace biz. Opinions/thoughts anyone?

When Bossidy announced that product knowledge was of no value in the management ranks, I figured it was time to get out of management, and I did.
Now we see where this has led us -- people in management who have no clue what we make, let alone how it works. Bossidy figured that a manager is a manager, but that's clearly not the case.
I could/should have retired 3-4 years ago, but I stick around to watch the parade. It is amusing, and it's better to put into the 401-K than take out, at least for the moment.
HON leaders in NJ just trying to s--- every penny out of the company and into their pockets. Accounts are in charge. They don't want to run a company and do not know how. One of their strategies is to pay less to employees, get the pay scale lowered. They do that partly by putting younger lower pay people into supervisory and managerial positions. Doesn't matter what you don't know and of course no training. Not a good sign for long term prospects. But then again there is no long term thinking anymore, doesn't matter if company does good or bad, just s--- out the cash. DC sure got his share
2jpx - if this is seriously your first company since graduation, you need to get different employment IMMEDIATELY before you get stuck here and think any of this is normal, like 80% of the current employees (most of whom have been stuck here for years and have 'been assimilated"). I have worked for other companies, in various industries, over the span of the past 25 years and I have NEVER encountered such a volatile and depressing work experience. Honeywell is truly the worst (and I've worked for the government, as well!!) company EVER for work experience. Horrible! Evil! Corrupt! Disgusting! I can't say it enough - RUN!!!
Been with the company since graduating 15 years ago. I can't agree more. Incompetence is rewarded with promotions and leadership rolls while productive technical people get stepped on. I am actively looking elsewhere for employment. I have lots to offer and still have many years left. Don't think Honeywell will last that long.
"... if you are smart, driven, and use critical thinking" ... and you are the least bit old ... you will go far -- out the door. You aren't wanted at HON. That should be obvious by now.
Agreed. Very top heavy AND full of unqualified people. I've never seen so much stupidity in one place as I have at HON, particularly in the higher levels of "leadership". It's full of people who think that Infosys is doing a good job, that creating cases in SFDC actually accomplishes something besides creating extra work, and sending emails all day to "get things done" justifies their position. It's truly unbelievable. One more thing, the odds are that if you're qualified and knowledgeable in your role, the odds of you being promoted are not good. I'm not sure if it's because they know they have too many chiefs and not enough native Americans and promoting them reduces productivity, or that they don't want intelligent people in those roles. Not sure which, maybe both. Safe to say that if you're driven, smart and use critical thinking, you will not go far at HON.
mzs..
When you say spin-off do you mean sale or a tracking stock type of thing? Does anyone have any rumors or info regarding possible spinoff or outright divestiture?
Anyone have details regarding how the numbers look that will be announced? Ive heard RIFs and furloughs really soon but not a lot of detail around what I have heard.
We saw a lot of promotions just before acquisition and mergers to try and put our leaders higher on the Org chart than the other companies teams. The divestitures and section mergers are coming in September per what our VP Kirishna Mikillani said in our town hall. Just a few more weeks to see what the "final solution" is. Bet the answer is spin off any business whose margins are below X% like they did with PMT and Advance 6
I've noticed this too. If you run a search through the HON white pages through AZ, and only specify "Director" in the job title, you'll be amazed at how many returns come up. We are definitely a "Too many chiefs, not enough Indians" company. Unfortunately too, the director and above levels tend to think that sending out emails to "status" people on their projects, is an actual job. They will send out email reminders and requests all day long and not actually DO any real work. It's crazy.
We don't have enough $$ to fund rd&e projects, but we have enough $$ to hire a few new vp's and send execs on lavish "business" trips. Meanwhile, the top talent is retiring our going where hard work is appreciated and rewarded. I've seen this before at another company that is now bankrupt. This business model isn't sustainable.
Exactly Honeywell is top heavy....example from an aerospace division: Our site leader reports to Multi-Site Leader reports to Network Director reports to Americas VP reports to ISC VP reports to Aerospace VP. Six layers of management not to mention the leadership staff /analysts /directors at each level that goes along with it, Quality/HOS, Op Ex, Materials, Engineering, HSE, Finance and Marketing. They can call it a reorg, but all they are doing is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
