Spend one hour a week on yourself. Maintain an up to date resume, keep current in the job search boards and social media, occasionally apply for a job. Be prepared and know where you stand in the job market. Giving yourself the freedom of choice is the greatest gift.

Wages are flat (have been for a long time), but if you have current skills and show you can work cross-gernerationally, there is no better time to leave than now. Waiting until you're culled is like playing chicken with the jobs market. It's to your advantage to leave now. If your skills aren't current, or you can't demonstrate that you can work well with 20 somethings as well as bomers, shore up those deficiencies quickly and get moving.

There is no need to panic and it will not help you to do so, but there is also no reason to wait around to see what happens next in this movie.

If the company is failing there is no benefit to you in sticking around to turn out the lights. Unless they offer you a life-changing sum to stay and work through the wind-up or sale of the business your best bet is to get a new job as soon as you can.

A job search can take a long time. You might as well get your job search started now while you still have a job. It would be a mistake to take a "wait and see" approach in hopes of getting a severance package.

Even if you get a package you will only have those funds to carry you through whatever time period your reinvention and job search take. Why put yourself in that position?

Also, people who are giving out non-retroactive pay increases to people whose raises have been on hold are not people who are going to give anybody a decent severance package.

People show you who they are!

Your instincts evolved over millennia to guide you to the next place on your path. Listen to your gut, and get your job search cooking.
