Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Senior folks fired over new hires

In my dept over 40 were let go and rumour has it more were let go. In my case they chose to keep several people with same skill set who were more recent hires and younger..which has me alarmed. Anyway 11 weeks per year of service and pays PTO balance.

Info from @O0uMBDQ-9vkd. This is truly disturbing, to see that UnitedHealth is getting rid of folks who have been there longer and have more experience for those who are, I am assuming, cheaper since they are new and young. I should not be surprised by this...

Everything United does is on the hush hush because they know it's wrong but they don't care about you or me or our families. What they care about is the Almighty dollar in making sure that the big-wigs are earning their $100 million plus wages and spening $5B today to buy David's. Lol They can't afford to pay nurses and social workers, PA's but let's shell out billions in cash. They are violating the warn act And yes for all you naysayers that say these layoffs are not going on trust me they are because I was just let go after 7 years of service no warning and my coworker in another department 15 years of stellar service multiple service award winner let go no notice. MERRY CHRISTMAS. Oh no wait....BAH HUMBUG- UHC

This is from UHC siteDaVita Medical Group to Join Optum

The agreement, entered into on December 5, 2017, calls for Optum to acquire DaVita Medical Group for approximately $4.9 billion in cash. The transaction is expected to close in 2018 and is subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.

It only pays PTO balance up to 40 hours. I was laid off and had much more PTO but the severance letter and HR Direct says not more than 40 hours.

No one has really mentioned what area this is happening in, but it's definitely not across the board. The truth is that they don't usually aim at high salaries or at employees that have gained the most PTO or seniority. They usually aim at lower performers or at people that are not in the good graces of the management. Believe it or not, this is true at most companies. Layoffs come in and upper management tells mid management that they have to get rid of X positions. They don't say they need to save $xxx. So the managers have discretion to relieve themselves of underperformers or folks that have pissed them off. So note that if you are a complainer or act like a jerk to your manager, you may be sealing your own fate.

Note that I do not work in management, I do not work in HR, and I don't represent United or its subsidiaries. I'm just a guy that has worked here long enough to see what happens.

Although layoffs are commons, this extreme phase of layoffs started in Nov/Dec 2016 and have recurred each month including June. They seemed to have cut low performers first, then targeted specific locations and more recently started to cut the very experienced, those with very deep knowledge.

Hiring is frozen in most IT and business areas, no one is safe. It will take years to build the morale up again.

It has nothing to do with age, simply pay.

Severance definitely isn't 11 weeks per year. Its 11 weeks for less than 3 years of service for grades 29 and higher.

Sad to hear the layoffs are still going on, that means they've been happening for over 3 months. Why would anyone want to work at this company? I can't even fathom how bad morale is now.

Nothing beats a bit of good old age discrimination, does not it....

Oh, UHC, how disappointing you can be sometimes...
