Thread regarding Denbury Resources Inc. layoffs

Are 9-80s really going away?

Keep hearing this around the office. Is there truth to it?

Bottom line is this. Like previous post said Dallas E&P started offering the perk to remain competitive for talent retention and attraction as the industry was slowly growing in 2004+. Fast forward to today, Still a large number of people unemployed and ones working are just fortunate to have a job period. I love 9/80 like anyone else, but companies have the leverage in today's market especially in DFW. They go away are you going to just quit, no. And if that was the only reason keeping you there then you'd already be gone or leave anyway regardless

most management still has old school way of thinking that if the field has to work on a Friday so does the office

I'm not disputing your history lesson, but your logic of why 9/80s are a potential problem is flawed. Any issue that could occur in the field is just as likely to happen in the middle of the night or on a weekend as it is on a friday afternoon. And every one of us is just as reachable by phone on Friday afternoons as we are on evenings and weekends. By your logic corporate offices need to be run in shifts with round the clock coverage, but that is not the case anywhere. I think 9/80s and flextime benefits are a fantastic way to incentivize employees with little to no cost or downside.

You have to understand where things come from, Dallas based companies, meaning long standing old Oil & Gas companies in DALLAS did not start the 9/80 trend, it was a HOUSTON PERK to try to get employees of one company to jump ship to go to another. It was not until around 2004 that companies in Dallas started doing the every other Friday Off in the Summer, then it changed into the Houston 9/80. Management never has liked having to do the 9/80's or the every other Friday off due to the fact that we are a 24/7 industry. You don't see the field shutting down on Friday to take a long weekend. the wells are still running and someone needs to be available to take the call from the field on Fridays. What if a blowout happened or GOD forbid another Conroe on a Friday, there needs to be the entire compliment of staffing to handle field issues. Management in Houston never liked the 9/80, but everyone else was doing it and the Perk spread to the Metroplex.

Yes, totally don't understand the problem with them. I almost always stay til 2 or 3 (and rarely leave at noon) and get lots done and still get home in time to pick up kids from school.

If true, why dies he hate 9/80s?

Swore I wouldn't post but can't stand it. He hates 9 80s. Was planning on announcing that they're going away 2 meetings ago but people were already flipping out over everything else so this is step 1 of getting there. Of course it makes no sense-saving energy, if even 1 group has to work the whole building has to be cooled and they barely turn it down on weekends/evenings. I can't stand having to lie to my own employees. This is just wrong.

Why worry about the 9/80's, it will all be history with the Bankruptcy filing, there wont even be any funds left for another layoff (RIF, so cute!). Might as well be looking for a job at a more stable company.

Then it would make sense to bring those employees under the 9/80 and sh-- the office down at 12 each Friday. Whether the 9/80 is half-day Fridays or alternating appears to have no impact on cost unless I'm missing something. It seems the only benefit for alternating is that some execs will eleiminate a day of the long commute from his/her mansion. Again, a self-serving benefit presented as a benefit to all. I should be accustomed to this by now...

The savings presumably comes at the expense of those who worked 8 hr days M-F before. I guess they will no longer have that option?

How does this save $ when everything will be running 9 hours on the open Friday. Instead of 2 half-day Friday's, having one 9 hour Friday, and the next closed, seems like a wash to me. This is presented like a great benefit, but I know absolutely NO ONE in our department wants it at all. When everyone else in the family isn't off, it's not like having a vacation day. And then the alternate Friday, everyone in the family will be home ready to start the weekend, and we'll be stuck at work. I know we are fortunate to still have a job, but this is yet another sacrifice along with all the additional responsibilities and cuts to comp and benefits. The proposed restructure is certainly not a benefit.

No loss of 9/80s. Instead, restructure them so alternate Fridays are taken off by all office employees, allowing cost reductions by shutting it HVAC/etc.

I would say loss of 9-80s should be the least of your concerns.

There will be so few employees after the next layoff in 2018 that the remaining staff will have to work 7 days a week just to keep up, That is unless DRI can start selling off fields such as Conroe and most of the So. Houston fields, Thompson, Webster and all of the Creeks in Mississippi. Stripper prices are projected to stay in the lower $50's up through 2022. Good Luck there!

My manager said there are discussions about this. Some of the top don't like them.

There wouldn't be a cost savings by eliminating th 9/80 so I don't see why it would be high on anybody's priority list of things to get rid of.

Worried about 9-80 work schedule. How dumb! Many employees that recently departed worked 7 days a week, and answered call most nights.

Hard to believe a great company has fallen so hard so fast.

Rumors rampant. Trolls on this board either should have been let go with their attitudes or were let go and stirring the pot. Forget trying to figure out what's coming next. Do your job, keep your eyes open and ride it. If you are still employed, you are better off than many.
