Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

August 2017

August is the beginning of 2nd half, expect BIG, BIG, BIG changes in staffing and compensation starting then. Culling of the herd will take place mid-July as those being cut will get notification that they have 2 weeks to find a new position internally or be separated if they can't.

Coincidentally there will be a Dell hiring freeze in place so unless you have deep connections to upper management there will be zero internal slots available.

to reach 80,000, we need to cut 60,000 jobs. using 1:10 manager to subordinate ratio, 6,000 people managers and 56,000 individual contributors. That is a lot of culling to do. Middle managers are generally easier to cut because Dell can change the ratio to 1:20 so they don't end up cutting the brains but hey, this is Dell, next thing you know the ratio became 1:5 and Dell will have buttload of managers managing themselves.

I've been on the two–month plan for over a year now, waiting and watching to see what happens in the next eight weeks. Maybe something happens, maybe it doesn't, but that can't stop people from just doing what is best for their own career. Opportunity is where you find it and where you make it. Put yourself first, take the opportunities that will pay off later, and don't worry about the outcome here. A nice check would be a bonus, but there are no guarantees anymore. Gird yourself, and get plenty of sleep.

By moving all the sales and Sales specialist to 50/50 they won't have to lay off we will live on our own. They know it and that is why all we hear about is this quarter and this half there is no tomorrow here for most of us. If your a AE or Specialist 3 or better and if your over 45 your in trouble. Went through it once before and should have never come back.

Compensation, if you are tech sales and on an 80/20 plan expect to go to a 70/30 with a corresponding increase in quota to make sure you don't hit that full 30%. Sales reps are rumored to be going to a 50/50 plan, that is for those lucky enough to still have a job after the 1/2 year house cleaning. Increased metrics to meet like number of sales calls per week and more micro management from above. It most certainly is all about $$$$ now and paying down enormous debt with a declining market for big chunks of the portfolio, cash has to come from somewhere and it won't be from Mr Dell's pocket.

It is simple: 140,000 employees are simply too many at current revenue levels. Less than 80,000 employees would be preferable. Then there is the debt-load than needs to be lessened. Taking a BIG chunk out of payroll cost is a great way to free up cash flow quickly. It is the money men running Dell now. Lean and mean. Good luck.
