Intel today resembles nothing like a leader. They want to dip their fingers into every little fad. As a result they are slowly losing focus on the core strength that is chip design and fabbing. Watches, jewellery, drones, modems, GPUs, network processors, ADAS, AI, Big-data, IoT, what not . . . . Don't think we'll ever see Intel leading in any of the these but will be scavenging for leftovers. Be worried that while doing that, Intel will lose leadership in PCs and Datacenter.

OP left out storage/memory conveniently because it is an example where Intel has shot up into a leadership position through technologies like Optane.
With networking as well our optical networking products are unmatched.
Time will judge about other things but Intel is well placed to invest whatever is needed to become leaders.
Sounds like IBM of decades ago in the end it all imploded there. Unlike IBM the clown has nothing but IBM mainframe.... soon TMG and many other parts will be throw away... very soon
Honestly, most Intel folks at level 9 and above don't have much idea what's going on. Most just play office politics and get to where they are through social networking and budding up to the higher ups. It is very obvious. But Intel is able to survive and prosper due to little or no competition. The world always needs workstations, servers, PCs, laptops. Go to any big OEMs and try to find a AMD processor, it's really hard. I've tried several occasions. In US its slightly easier to find AMD systems but in Asea, it close to zero. As long as there is no viable competition from AMD, Intel will continue to make obscene amounts of $ through its ridiculous pricing. But everyone who wants a workstation or server have little choice. Many are talking about ARM, but reality, ARM haven't been able to make much inroad and will probably take many more years to try to make some inroads. x86 is too deeply entrenched in most corporations.
If any other company is run like Intel, throwing $, wasting $, pay huge compensation to majority of level 9 and above who does not do much except play office politics, most companies would have close shop. But due to Intel's x86 scenario and AMD's never been a real competition, it's hard to see anything significant will change at Intel.
True, world is moving towards non PCs, but the fact remains, there is still huge amount of sales for PCs, laptops, workstations, servers. And Intel continue to milk this market with USD60billion revenue a year!
