Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Quotas over competence, and the slippery slope of mediocrity

Ask colleagues about candidates who are not qualified, but who still get hired. Ask your manager if he/she has full choice in hiring. You’ve probably seen the “45%” URM & female hiring quota as being “met” in VP & GM status reports. Intel was built on meritocracy, not privilege. If you are knowledgeable, your opinion could override that of higher-ups. We know what’s coming next: In 2-3 years, the mantra will be “The promotion wall”. The quota will be graduated up, & so on. Eventually, the unqualified will also become managers, higher more like themselves, & the cycle of mediocrity grows.

@2xlt that is very interesting. So let me get this straight. You are at a non-US site with different available URM TAM but you are being held to US TAM anyway?

I live in a country where URMs are pretty much nonexistent, and of CS BSc graduates 12% are women, but we are still expected to hit the same diversity targets. Hiring managers are so desperate that they are hiring women with degrees like mechanical engineering and no programming skills whatsoever for SW developer jobs. How is that fair to male candidates, with proper degrees and years of experience who get rejected?

LGBT is not urm in intel's definition. I'm g-- and everyone I worked with in my group and out side of my group knew I was a high performer, except my director and my vp. Both of them were female. Don't know how they became grad 11-12 but they didn't have any sort of hands on experience to make technical judgments or meritocracy evaluation. Anyway, I got a huge offer from another big company so I left three months ago. Don't blame LGBT and good luck intel.

You can claim you are an URM and trans s-xual, that will get you a first-class, fast-track ticket to upper management. Qualifications, experience and skills don't matter. They are actually a liability.

You can claim any race or ethnicity you want and Intel can't question it. It's federal law.

I know someone who was able to get past the non-URM filter by claiming they were Native American... Not true, but no consequences... They got the job and some actual URM did not.

Sad but true. Good post OP. I know many untouchable hires who filled a quota and can't do anything. They are fake. Smiley meeting attendees. Technically incompetent. Can't build anything. Slide makers. And the worst thing, don't want to learn anything new. Simply can't contribute.

We are well into cycle of mediocrity, not because of URMs but due to years of thinning out the technical competence and execution skills.

What is to prevent me from claiming I'm an URM on a job application? How would they even check?

If I'm Chinese and I say I'm African American, what would happen?

From what i see the promote up the ranks of dubiously qualified has been going on for some time. DB vs. KS running server? RJ was president not any number of better qualified? AE is in charge of strategy? Now the ones doing the hiring, firing and selecting for promo value "influnce" skills over technical know how because they cant recognize the latter to save their lives. Whomon the board do you consider capable of sorting technical merit from the artistic pretty foil decks? I think there are many more elete ppt graphic artists than talented ee/cs/device physics employees.

Unless these posts are inxorrect_ looks like Intel is going the Motorola, Kodak, Poloroid, some may even say IBM, Sears way. Completely full of themselves and refusing to recognize the marketplace.

If u are URM you get brought in and only look to see if you are unqualified. " can they do the job"

If you are Asian male and the best qualified, forget it. " we have too many of those"

Words from my boss, kid you not.
