Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Kmart "Inventory Blowout Sales"

I heard that several Kmart stores were running "Inventory Blowout Sales." It sounds eerily similar to a store closing sale... No roto's ran during the sale, just % off everything in the store. However, unlike a store closing sale, it's still ran by Kmart (no liquidator) and layaways are still allowed. During the last round of store closings announced, only a couple of the stores running these signs were announced to close.

According to our softlines supervisor, my store is slated to start this "Inventory Blowout Sale" in July, and it will run until August. Does anyone know about these?

Also, I heard store manager talking to one of the evening supervisors that if the annual inventory is pushed back, it's a bad sign? Any ideas

Blowout sale in our store a flop. Some people looking not buying. Prices are better when they run weekly sale

It's an annual sale. They need to make room for the fall stuff, which will be arriving soon. Many stores start their summer clearance sales in the height of summer and start selling fall/winter stuff while it's still warm out.

Many of the "Blowout" prices are the same prices that would have been used during this time anyway. 10% off all microwaves for instance. Or some of the major appliances being the exact same price they have been for the past several months. I don't like that the signs are hand written for the most part. It looks trashy like they ARE going out of business. I've worked at Kmart for 13 years and one of the mainstays was "no handwritten signs." It would not have been hard to run this through the sign system. I'm not sure if there have been hiccups with all the layoffs at corporate and that is why it was done this way. Or if they think this will generate sales by making it "look" like a going out of business sale. Which if how busy I was today is any indication it seems to have worked. The only good thing about it besides bringing in more members today is that it's only every 3-4 weeks that signs need changed instead of every Sunday and when the monthly ad starts.

I've been told they're trying to compete with Amazon Prime days. I've also been told the store where I am is considered a top store and there's no sign of closing.. despite layoffs.

Either way, I still don't understand why you'd mark down your- somewhat- already cheap inventory just to try and raise sales.

It is a way to raise fast cash. SHC has run out of money, they are not paying vendors, and they need cash fast. The inventory reduction sale is not an indication that your store will close, but delaying inventory is a sure sign that the store will close soon.

Small town Oscoda Michigan Kmart is having one of these so called blow out sales. A friend of mine who lives there received postcard in the mail announcing this event. Wondering if this Kmart will close as it's the only retail store in Oscoda.. Walmart is 20 miles south.

it will be very hard in this community if this particular Kmart closes..

its just sad for all the workers loosing their jobs

I miss our local Kmart s. We lost 4 within a 20 mile radius

Some states have laws against having store closing sales more than 30 days before the store actually closes. So they get around it by having an Inventory Blowout sale prior to the closing sale. Such is the case with our store. We were notified June 22 that our store would be closing on Sept 17. We are having an "Inventory blowout" until mid Aug., then a "closing sale". No public announcement that the store is closing has been made.

Boost sales? Geez, really......they are trying to raise cash because they don't have enough to operate. This way, Eddie gets the most out of the company before the BK Trustee takes control. He's just milking it for all he can, while he can!

It will be going to all stores beginning in July. It's an attempt to boost sales for our members and not an indication of stores closing.

I'm betting if the inventory is pushed back then yes there is trouble. My old store put off inventory in early April only to be on the list of stores closing this round.
