Mid-range Storage - ODell storage Compellent shown the door

It was clear last week. The head of mid-range Storage announced in Minnesota design center that there will be no further work on Compellent. EMC will focus on unity and the next-gen. It is the herald of the end of Dell Storage ie if you want to consider acquisitions like Eqalogic, Compellent and the Israeli exanet as Dell products. All these products are killed now. The focus will now be on the HCI next-gen product and engineering folks in Minnesota have been asked to look out for openings in these programs or quit. It is virtually a war between EMC and Dell with EMC leaders in Storage taking revenge on their Dell underlings for the humiliating acquisition by Dell.

Mass recruitment in low cost regions is a red signal for US teams. Cuts are coming.

There is a mass recruitment drive planned in EMC Bangalore in July. This is for building up a 100 member team in low cost Bangalore for SC-Compellent sustenance. The modus of recruitment is through a Job fair where engineers will walk in with their resumes to get interviewed and hired in a phased manner.

Any news what happened to the Dell EMC SC9000 series which was touted as Dell’s highest-performing all-flash and hybrid-storage-server solution leveraging the latest Storage Center Operating System 7. A singing bird tells me this is the biggest flop of Dell Storage.

SC Compellent is dead and everyone in MDC and NDC knows it. As part of the Dell merger with Emc they decided to list it and support it to make existing customers some what happy. So many years and so much of money is wasted on r&d with features that doesn't work and developing an useless web client.

it's a political drama and the plan is to slowly try to transition EqualLogic and Compellent customer base to EMC storage. Dell realized that's not happening and SC is out.

You are living in a fools paradise if you believe SC and Unity have market gain potential. Just open your eyes and see what Amazon, Microsoft,Nimble, solidfire, pure,Netapp are doing in the marketplace. While the Dell inefficient machinery is involved in their dysfunctional merger the others are disrupting the market. Wake up Rip Van Winkle.

Two new SC models announced within the past 6 months. A third on the way (public knowledge) mid quarter next Q. The reintroduction of file services to the SC with investment in the 8700 line. New code updates this summer. New Unity lineup with more horsepower. Added distributed sparing. Code updates continue. Flipping troll. Both lines will continue on until the code base can be merged or a new product developed. Still nothing better with data efficiency than SC and nobody owns the mid-range market like VNX/Unity. Now if the infighting would stop, DellEMC would absolutely own the market. Go troll elsewhere.

Storage is dead - 3 years ago a VMAX was 11 bays wide - now it only takes 1/2 a bay for same storage capacity - wait a few more years and it will be in a shoe box or on a memory board in the server

Dell is wasting R&D money on Cyclone project, we don't need NDC, MDC and Hopkinton working on low end array. Thousands of engineers from distributed teams making no progress. False slides and meeting minutes along with finger pointing across sites. Is execution this dumb and lame. Just pure political and everyone saving their jobs at expense of MD dime. I even sent an email to MD and he never cared.

Cut and paste of code for firmware and features doesn't help. I will bet my money that Cyclone is either too cheap, too late compared to compitators or will never gets released.

Cyclone is a project materialized like the rabbit from the magicians hat. It is a sleight of hand product which will never see the light of the day but the hopkinton folks will take a fat package out by fooling MD.

Unity is a 15 year old VNX and with a law suit over the name, EQL is end of life in 2014, and SC Compellent s---s with no sales. Every insider knows that.

What are the chances that cheap cyclone will succeed, as I know all the engineers who are working on it. Either it will never gets released or fall on customers face.

To MD and under skilled executives, YOU WILL NEVER SUCCEED WITH MANAGERS/DIRECTORS POLITICS. THEY GOT RID OF BEST EMPLOYEES AND KILLING YOUR COMPANY.

SC being dead was already announced almost a year ago because of the upcoming EMC acquisiton.

Same and worse for FS.

See situation now. Both are healthy products.

Would one really butcher the goose that lays golden eggs?

Cheap propaganda out of inside EMC classic influential circles?

If unity is a lame duck against SC series why have they stalled SC work and moved them to cyclone. Dell storage is a goner.

We'll see...

looking at trends of numbers of boxes sold and customer satisfaction,

for the blok part, Unity is a lame duck against SC series.

and this directly addressed @ the primary poster:

You re looking so well informed that you not even spell Equallogic right - huh?

No "war" also - many classic EMC (We are all DELL EMC now !!!) technical sales people adopt the technologies rapidly and thus can offer what`s right for the customer better than ever before.

Trolls trying to inflict a war situation should be the ones to be shown the door ;-)

Maybe that´s what quite a few are afraid of?

PLONK!

Too much of politics between ndc and mdc, as a matter of fact, ndc destroyed mdc.

All it matter is who has job and power. I feel pathetic to be part of it

@NErnNKM-1kat you actually just described the management/culture within EMC CS Mid Atlantic Division, all the way up to HR and Legal, who are always ready to report for duty to make it all go away. That's the cultural difference.

Perils of global capitalism and we have to face it. India and China will take away American jobs unless we are into cutting edge innovation. We can bemoan their lack of technical expertise of not being on par with the US teams. For the executive management they serve the purpose of keeping the capitalist machinery ticking at low cost.

It is well known that the Dell Bangalore Storage team consists of an unprofessional bunch of people who are abrasive towards other teams and treat their own teams like filth. Top senior members of this team have proven HR cases of abuse recorded against them. Legal and HR teams in Dell India are unlike the ones in US and Europe. They are pretty much lax on employee rights, ethics and code of conduct violations. This provides the breeding ground for leaders to think and act like potentates. The executive management wouldn't bother as long as they are getting their cost savings.

Management model of Dell India is an arcane hierarchical factory model. Dell's main area of Business there are contact centers and manufacturing assembly lines. That is from where the management culture stems out. In contrast EMC CoE in India is a professionally governed organization. My hope for our present and future extended teams in Dell is let some of these values percolate down.

NDC does exists with 350+ engineers doing nothing for the past 4 years. Why not enjoy free pay as long as you can make a fool of company. No work, no accountability, come when you want and leave at will.

I feel sorry for MDC, everyone knows that it is a matter of time before EqualLogic and Compellent were end of life.

We at NDC used them big time for past 3 plus years for projects and now started talking bad about them to Dell and EMC executives. We now use EMC as we are close to Hopkinton and ended up getting a piece of cyclone and other projects.

How else do you think we are surviving for years doing nothing, EMC will learn the hard way about NDC.
