Thread regarding Nokia Corp. layoffs

Wireless Software Developers and Testers were let go last month. But H1B Visa software developers and testers working in wireless were kept.

USA (Citizens) Wireless Software Developers and Testers were let go in Feb. But H1B Visa software developers and testers working in other wireless department were kept. Shouldn't the USA Citizens be offered the H1B visa guys job. Why isn't HR offering the H1B visa guys jobs to the USA Citizen (at the H1B visa) salary, before letting the USA Citizen go.

The entire purpose of H1B Visa employees is because there are not enough specific skilled people (let's say sw dev and tester) within the company. Well, Nokia/ALU just let go 15+ Sw Dev and Testers. Why weren't they offered the H1B Visa guys position? Especially since both the H1B Visa guys and the USA Citizen guys have the same exact skill set (and the USA guys have much more experience in wireless 15+ years then the H1B guys). I think many employees would take a salary cut if needed to continue working at Nokia/ALU (at least until they are qualified for pension).

Why isn't HR doing something about this?

How does an H1B guy from testing move to the customer service department? Didn't ALU/Nokia hire him for the testing job? Why does he get to save his job and other USA citizen with more experience them him get laid off? How was he able to get a job in the customer service job in the first place? Is Nokia playing the favoritism card for this one case?

In my opinion, all H1B employees should be laid off before any USA contractors or USA permanent employees. The definition of H1B - is to hire the person when there is a job shortage with that specific skill. There are so many people in USA Nokia with the same exact skills the H1B guy has. He should have been laid off a long time ago before other USA permanent employee. In my opinion, it seems that Nokia USA (HR) is acting unfairly. Nokia USA HR should look into this case since when he moved from one test group to another, there was some favoritism done and no one said anything about it. Again, this is all in my opinion.

Don't you know that's what the H1B visa program is for. Replace US employees with cheaper foreign labor.

Seriously, what you people from US expect ? That Nokia bought alu for engineers ? For products ?

Nokia has 3x more people than it needs and this is seriously slowing us down.
