Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

How has the SLB layoff changed your life?

I am in the verge of a divorce. I am still looking for work after a year and aim perceived as incapable of handling a family

Life could be so much worse. Keep your head up and expand your options. Diversify yourself as much as you possibly can. It will get better.

Broaden your horizons and look in other industries. You may have to accept the fact that you will earn less, but that's life sometimes. Really dig into the finer points of your skills, and draw connections to application outside oil & gas. I was laid off in November 2015, and by January 2016 was in a new job in a growing company not related to SLB at all. Yes, I took a pay cut. Yes, my spending habits had to adjust. But I still earn enough to provide a good North American lifestyle for my family, where my spouse has the option to work or not. And once the dust is settled, if you're still angry at SLB, pack up your seniority awards and mail them to the Board of Directors with insufficient postage.

I am the OP. Yes it is genuine. I have been off work for a year (9th round of layoff)and my wife cannot believe i am unable to secure work. This is not a troll. I am trying to find some solace for my situation from this place.

I am sorry to hear this. I also went through traumatic experience for both me and my family. Don't forget that you are not alone. There are 50,000 more individuals and their families affected by the layoffs from SLB. Hope things will work out well for you and your family soon. Take care.

I wouldn't post on this board for enlightenment as there are all kinds of fruit cases who post opinions and most of it is b---s---. The only thing I would say is don't hang your hat with a service company as they are not interested in you.

First of all I'm sorry about the things you are going through, that said, if the things were flipped, would you have ditched your partner because of a layoff? Sometimes this kind of events show the true color of a person.

Second, remember to divide what's going on in your life between the things you can control and the one you can't. Unfortunate you can't control a partner, you can't control an employer, but you can control what you do and depending on the conditions, where you live. If you live in a city that has been hit hard by this oil recession, you can evaluate to move, if your education is not enough, you can take classes and work toward a degree or a more advanced one, if jobs in your field aren't in demand, you can broaden it and ask for less money.

I know it sounds heartless but at the end it does comes down just to that. Understand what is under your control and your power to do something about it. Stop fighting battles that you can't win and move on.

I am sorry to hear that friend. You aren't alone. It s---s, I know.

My husband and I were both laid off last year. I started a small business. He is still without work. I know it is hard on him. He will never be able to find work at the level where he was. He keeps busy in other ways. At first it was very hard on him. Now he kind of goes with the flow. Unfortunately we don't have much of an income coming in. I hope the industry turns around.

Try not to dwell. I was very angry at first. I devoted 20 plus years to Schlumberger. Always had great reviews. My fate changed after my last "heartless" manager who had only been in the job for a month. He didn't know me, my work, my role. I am sure he didn't even bother to read my previous appraisals. I was a number, a headcount, a salary.

I hope you find something.
