Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

it's designed to get you to quit

Here's some hard (but free) advice from somebody who has been there and I hope you follow it:

Look.

What's happening to you is you're being managed out. It happened to me, it (might) be happening to you, and it's happened to countless other people at Target. It's just how they fire.

While sometimes a bad performance review is needed if you're not meeting management's expectations, it should feel somewhat obvious to you what the pain points are.

However, If you're blindsided after years of stellar performance, and the review you're getting seems excessively nitpicky or irrational, then what's happening to you is strategic and is not actually a reflection on your day-to-day performance, but instead, is a legal strategy to remove you from your employment. It's also miserable and demeaning to endure should you endure it. It's not designed to be fair, it's designed to get you to quit.

Take this as a sign that it's time to look for external employment, and get the jump early. Don't wait. It's pointless, fruitless, and doesn't solve anything. Think of it like staying in a bad relationship for too long hoping it will fix itself. Yeah, 1 out of 50 times it might, is it worth the grief? No. Life is to be lived. Move on.

100% agree. It is up or out. have been on the Manager side getting the pressure from above to start managing someone out and on the receiving side. It will happen to you...some sooner than others based of their perceived thoughts of whether you have the potential to be at the next level. Even if you are stellar in your role, but not material for the next level you become a target and just a matter of time. If they can hire a new kid at less than you make...you become a target. Best get out...that is what I did.

Years later...best move I ever made. Also got 30% more in the next role outside Target and now almost make 2x what I did back then 5 years later.

When I gave my noticed my boss acted all sad and surprised but I could tell she was secretly happy. Then several other managers told me "this is a really good opportunity for you" basically confirmed that they had no idea what to do with me. I'm at a new company now, making WAY more money and life couldn't be better.

I believe they really do want many people to up and quit. If people dont, they will certainly begin another round of layoffs. The stock is tanking and sales are down.....you can only hold that so long before you start putting the whole thing in jeopardy.

Yep just happened to me. There is a part of me that is sad and then there is this sense of freedom.

OP, I fully agree with your assessment. I saw it coming and was able to find a new position outside of Target before the end of the last review cycle. I got what little bonus they were giving and got out and could not be happier in my new role. Good luck to all of you facing this situation. There are better jobs out there
