Anyone on here from HR? My boss tanked me on my review even though I have proof that projects I lead got great results. I'm not an a-- kisser and it seems that's being used against me. Others on my team who worked on the same projects got 5% + bonus. I'd like to dispute my rating. Is that an option?

It's true - Target has a way of pushing you out...all seems very innocent but they are just f'ing with you...I retired (because I could) after 29 years and the last 6 months were miserable...I might not be a fit is what I was told...after 29 years?? Sneaky critters they are - as well as 2-faced; It really disappoints me in how Target treats their team members, those who have been loyal and had working...had I known, it would have changed years ago (I was too busy working). My loyalty is gone...I don't care and I will shop at Walmart or any other competitor just to avoid the "Evil Red" - go forth my fellow team members...get a new job (say nothing), then quit without notice (no time for you to back everything up and train) - leave them dangling...they will survive.
I don't know why any of you continue to work for a company that could care less about you as a human being. Find a new job that will pay you what you are worth
If you received a review score of (0) on this past review the best option is to just move on, regardless of previous review scores. There is no future for you at Target. It has to be stressful on managers as they carry out this extermination process so dishonestly. True?
Here's some hard (but free) advice from somebody who has been there and I hope you follow it:
Look.
What's happening to you is you're being managed out. It happened to me, it (might) be happening to you, and it's happened to countless other people at Target. It's just how they fire.
While sometimes a bad performance review is needed if you're not meeting management's expectations, it should feel somewhat obvious to you what the pain points are.
However, If you're blindsided after years of stellar performance, and the review you're getting seems excessively nitpicky or irrational, then what's happening to you is strategic and is not actually a reflection on your day-to-day performance, but instead, is a legal strategy to remove you from your employment. It's also miserable and demeaning to endure should you endure it. It's not designed to be fair, it's designed to get you to quit.
Take this as a sign that it's time to look for external employment, and get the jump early. Don't wait. It's pointless, fruitless, and doesn't solve anything. Think of it like staying in a bad relationship for too long hoping it will fix itself. Yeah, 1 out of 50 times it might, is it worth the grief? No. Life is to be lived. Move on.
Standard procedure for over sized corporations - same thing happened at Bes Buy when I was there. Keep your head up and don't let them break your confidence. It's hard to have a good attitude when you're told you are worthless- You Are Not Worthless!
I feel your pain! I'm not in HR, but am in an administration position. I've been with a DC for almost 20 years! Been dedicated, loyal and highly respected for my hard work and flexibility. I have more on my plate than my peers as well as I absorbed much of the logistics Responsibility's that were downsized (never compensated for this at all). My raises and reviews have always reflected my hard work and dedication up until these last two-three years! You now have to be a kiss a-- to be recognized and get a nice review and respect!!! Not the company I started with! Thought I would retire from an awesome company!!! Sadly,, I am realizing it won't be Target!! Actively seeking!! 😕
Sounds like the typical TGT gaslight approach: let me guess: you've been w the company for over 10 years; you're over 40; you're near the top of the pay grade. It's what they do to get rid of high earners - try to convince you you are no longer good at a job you've been doing for years - even though in your eyes nothing has changed in your performance. Suddenly everything you do needs improvement. Meanwhile the 22 year old sitting next to you is being treated like he/she has the world by the tail. They roll their eyes and think you just don't get it. Subtle age descrimination - TGT has mastered the art. Take splice in knowing that one day the a-hole manager and his cronies will be in your shoes.
7zbe: focus brother..... You really wanting help on your review???? Bashing people in general???? Trying to goad others???? Spewing your politics???? Hating Target in general???? Or just a jerk?!
Target is tanking......only the a-- kissers will "temporarily" succeed. This is a sinking ship and you need to start applying elsewhere.....as I am doing! They refuse to acknowledge the boycott and they are throwing our, once great jobs, away with their false pride! Target needs to stay out of politics and start competing....rather than getting run over! Sick of it!
We lost the soccer game. I payed my best and worked really hard. I want to disputed the score.
increases are budgeted just like everything at Target. Budgets are allocated base on company dollars/numbers. Numbers have been poor, I'm sure all that work at Target are very aware of what the company number/score was.... everybody got a piece of the very small pie. You had to be an absolute rock star to get anything meaningful. I doubt your manager did any better, I know I didn't.
OP, is it possible that 3jyv is your boss?
What kind of raise do you expect? Inflation is at 2.7%, companies have been averaging 3% raises for years. The managers want to give everyone something, and probably don't want to dip below 2%. that doesn't leave much for top performers.
I'm not saying it's right, but that's the math.
I was one of those who got a great review score, with glowing praise but a tiny little raise. Then was made to think the raise was my reward for having such a great year. My argument was that if I had such a great year, and exceeded (as you say in my review) why am I getting the same raise (or a smaller raise) as everyone else? Back and forth for about 90 minutes. Got nowhere. Seems to be the same conversation every year. Then again, I'm not one of the Chosen Few.
3lfg: WHAT???? I don't like my review I'm lawyering up? Definitely the nuclear option. A logical response to the OP and every other "my Target leader is unjustly keeping me down, targeting me, not recognizing me" etc is this:
Receive review, feedback, lack of love that you feel is not accurate to your performance - Buck up and ask why your review score etc is not lining up with your super star exceptional performance. Have proof/documentation of said exceptional performance. I.e projects that you impacted, exactly what your role was, TM's you helped develop etc. Present this and then ask for a formal response from your leader. Be prepared for a harsh landing. There are plenty of TM's at Target who are completely clueless about how they stack up against their peers. You may be one of them. If your not and you truly believe that you are being targeted. Interview with other companies while you still work at TGT and move on. You may want to also look in the mirror. Volunteering that your not an a$$ ki$$er says I have a chip on my shoulder and you rate yourself on your perceived defects of others and not on your own merits.
Sigh I’m not in HR, but I do have experience with a similar situation. Dirtbag managers falsifying and exaggerating performance reviews to punish their least favorite employees is a common practice at Target. Happens all the time. The bad news is, if you want to dispute your review to HR just get a salary increase, you are probably not going to succeed. However, if your score was really so low that you got no merit increase or bonus, your manager may be trying to set you up for something worse: Corrective Action and eventual job termination. In that event, it is a good idea to start building your case against your manager, and creating a rapport with HR. It may also in your best interest to seek outside legal counsel if there was a discriminatory or unethical practice going on that would exclude you and allow the rest of your team to get substantial salary increases. Having a lawyer in your corner is a powerful deterrent from your boss to continue sh*tting on you and might scare HR a bit. So you will be taken seriously.
Check out your Minnesota Employees Rights at https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=181. Statute 181.962 states that if you disagree with information in your personnel record (a.k.a. your yearly performance review) and that you cannot come to a resolution with your employer, you are legally entitled to dispute your record by writing a statement of your position. This statement should be less than five pages. As MHbiNSF-2tig wisely advised, it is not worth going to HR unless you can back up your statement with cold hard facts and evidence. Start gathering whatever documents you can to prove your point: old emails, meeting invites, agenda, spreadsheets, PowerPoints, financial reports, etc.
Furthermore, you are legally entitled to all of your personnel records on file. You should request these transcripts from HR as soon as possible to see what information they actually have on you. Hopefully, if you have reviews from past years with good scores and that demonstrate a consistence performance, HR may start to question the accuracy of your current manager’s account of you.
If at all possible, you should find out if your manager sent out requests for feedback to your coworkers to write your review. Many TGT managers are so lazy, they talk to no one beforehand, and just write from their singular perspective. Other leaders are so cruel, they only send out feedback request to a few, handpicked collaborators who are guaranteed to only give the most negative of comments and skewed perspectives. If HR is able to pick up on any of these tactics, it will dent the integrity of your manager’s review. It would be wonderful if you could get some of your trusted teammates and coworkers to write testimonials on your behalf. This could counteract whatever your boss wrote about you.
From my perspective, the only point of going to HR with your dispute is to contest the credibility of your manager, thus undermining their power to harass and harm you. As MHbiNSF-2tig also pointed out, managers at Target are very temporary. Transferring to a different team or finding a new job may be more practical. Going to HR with your dispute will have long-term repercussions on your career. Word might get out and other leaders may not want to work with you.
p.s. Managers who see not kissing @$$ as the same thing as being “difficult to work with” sums up all that is wrong Target HQ. These idiots rather have their d**ks s---ed and egos stroked than actually see quality results.
Oh, well if you're not an a$$ kisser, then you can kiss any chances of changing your increase goodbye! They love a good kiss!
There is more to your review than "great results" on your projects. You mentioned that you are not an A$$ kisser, which sometimes is code for you are difficult to work with.
I have also left Target. The only advice I can give you is that HR is not there for the employee, they are there to protect the interest of Target. If you do go to HR, you need to bring hard facts and examples. You can't win if you get into a s(he) said / s(he) said situation. they will always side with the manager. I wish you luck. the one good thing is that Target moves their managers around so much is that maybe you will have a new one soon! I out lasted a couple out of my own stubbornness, but finally decided to get away from all the games. Love where I work now!
Story of my career when I was there! Good luck! I know of one person who disputed her raise, basically threatened to quit, made a huge stink, and they gave her a little more. Rare case. I just left Target because I was sick of the same thing every year.
