Thread regarding Nokia Corp. layoffs

Workers in USA are being fire and replaced with Nokia employees in India

The other shoe has finally dropped after Nokia bought Alcatel-Lucent in a deal that guaranteed the French government the jobs would stay and even increase in France, it is now for the former ALU USA employees to pay the price for that deal. USA in the only high cost region in which the government does not and did not protect it's citizen in this deal, and we are feeling the brunt of the layoffs. The people being laid off are not redundant but rather are being back-filled with Nokia employee's in from low cost countries. I have been with this company and it's predecessor's for over 30 yrs and this is the sadist period. Seeing so many knowledgeable experienced worked fire to subsidize this merger. Especially since the lion's share of Nokia revenue is from the USA.

My observation only, it seems to me that Nokia is laying off older highly paid US employees and then if there is a US base opening, even when there is a qualified US person available still on payroll in their layoff notice period, HR are encouraging hiring managers to fill their open positions with a qualified candidate from one of their subsidiaries in a low cost region using the L1A visa as a manager intracompany transfer, if there is no offshoring options for that job, thereby effectively reducing US payroll cost while circumventing labor certification requirement.

Nokia is using cheaper labors and makes itself cheaper now.

Yep, ALU screwed a lot of people! It's been 5 years since I had to take an early buyout and since then I've been working "contract" jobs which is a total waste of time and energy. These companies that hire contractors, they pick your brain for all your experience and knowledge, then once they are where they want to be, you are let go! I had 16 years with ALU, too young to retire, yet here I am.....I'm tired of working dead end contract jobs. Time to re-invent myself!!

If you have a company in the US then you should hire US citizens first and not be replaced with people from other countries! That should be another revised law! These Business owners and other countries cannot keep taking advantage of the US! No having a company here and hiring from all other countries is just wrong to the US! They should become citizens first the legal way if they want to work here in the US ! Trump Alert we need you here! Help !I thought it was suppose to be America First! Layoffs of Americans should be revised ASAP!

They will keep the H1B1 as they are cheaper. The workers of the USA better get organized and stop this .

There were layoffs last year and a USA Citizen in a test group in his early 50's was let go instead of an H1B visa holder in the same group doing the same job. The H1B visa holder is still with the company and was able to move into a different department where there haven't been any layoffs (at least not in USA in that department). Shouldn't the H1B visa holder be let go instead of the USA citizen who is qualified to do the same exact job? I am really surprised at ALU HR for letting this transfer happen. The entire purpose of H1B visa worker is due to shortage of a specific skill the company is unable to find within the company. We now have plenty of ALU folks with lots of experience and different skills in USA (who are USA citizens). So why does the company still play favor to H1B Visa employees? I guess it all boils down to who knows who and who is willing to save you from getting cut.
