It is not the law. Severance just covers them from people suing them in the future, you are signing all your rights away...Sears hasn't been the best company to its employees so it's going to provide severance to everyone to cover their backs.

SHC doesn't care about quality workers anymore; they only care to cut costs.

As for severence, many states require severence be offered in the case of mass layoffs. (Sears is multi-state, so the harshest state's laws are applied.)

Other than that, whwn you accept severence from SHC you also must sign an agreement promising you won't sue.
