Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Should I stay in intel or just leave

Have been working for Intel for a couple of years. My org does not expand its business. In general how long can you get one promotion, say, from 7 to 8, 8 to 9, and 9 to 10? I am wondering if I need to leave this place if each promotion takes too long to happen. If I go for a new job, I may have to move out of the state that is a whole hell lot of effort.

I read an article in linkedin that in Google outstanding people can get promoted every quarter. how come in Intel promotion takes so long? If each promotion takes ten years, then I can be easily laid off when I become 40s (because my level is still at the bottom and can be easily replaced by cheap H1Bs)

Look at what Intel values.

You can tell by who is on top making the most and setting the direction for the company.

If you have these skills stay.

The people on the top or those getting promoted usually have the best PR skills, are minorities and are young.

Ask yourself what happened to all the older, talented people who worked hard, delivered but did not fit the above criteria...

Focus on taking care of number 1.... you only have so many days at Intel

I joined a new group about 5 to 6 years ago. From the start I knew I wasn't wanted there. Still I put my head down and worked really hard, I did the work of my life. I took on lots of responsibility got great results, first time right silicon, papers published etc. But still only got 'successful'. Left the group into something I'm not suited to or interested in and my career feels ruined. Feel I'm just holding on until I'm asked to leave. Not good

One of my colleagues went from grade 9 to 11 in 2 years. She was kind of in the right place at the right time and the right gender.

Favored people can rocket up the ranks. Others can stay in the same job and grade forever. I've seen people bust their arses and do really good work and get nowhere and others play powerpoint games, steal others' credit and get promoted. It really depends on whether your boss and their boss like you.

I've been at grade 6 for 7 or 8 years. Recently made a lateral move so I don't see any promotion prospects. Judging from this site is need to be worried for my future. Any opinions on what I can do

My observation has been:

Their sole intent is to get as much out of you very as little cost as possible.

Once they get you in, they will beat you down (note examples in comments) and slow your progress in a multitude of ways.

They have no loyalty to you, and if you were smart you would take care of #1 first.

Unless you are a brilliant politician, you need to bounce around until you get where you want to be.

I don't mean internally either, HR is adamant about not doing promotions with transfers and will fight it tooth and nail regardless of what the hiring manager tells you. In addition an internal transfer will send you back to the starting line, as they tend to perceive it as a retrain rather than an expansion of you skillset.

If you value your career, better off to leave. Intel is all talk and no action for employee careers, driven by the lying mgmt. If you don't care about your career and value the paycheck, then stay.

Sadly OP individuals that you see rise up very quickly within the company are those that can play the political game well. It's not about how hard you work, or how impactful your contributions are, it's really about who at a higher level can vouch for you and push you forward. As other comments have stated going from each grade can be quite long or it can be faster than a blink of an eye. My suggestion would be to learn the political game quickly, get yourself visible to people at VP level and above, and promotions will follow quickly. One last piece of advice is knowing key individuals in various organizations especially Chief of Staff's. Their network is insanely beneficial to getting visible and can bump you quickly to at least Grade 9 and Grade 10. Good luck!

Maybe, OP, you're just not as important as you think you are. I know of people who got promo'd very quickly, one person from g8 to 10 in 4 years, another from g5 to 11 in 13 years. They are all extremely smart, very hard working, personable, and don't spend time on these boards complaining and acting all entitled.

Grade 7 transferring or doing a Grade 9 job does not promote them to Grade 9. The FLM/SLM will ensure they continue to abuse and use the Grade 7 to work at a Grade 7 salary providing some lame whatever excuse to not promote them.

Just as my manager did telling me he can get a grade 6 to do the grade 9 work, but he will not promote a grade 8 to a grade 9. He said you have to stay at your current grade for a few years before getting a promotion to next grade, irrespective of the good work done. The job when undertaken was advertised as a grade 9, with manager title.

Promotion is all about contribution and progression compared to the order Grades.

A 7 performing like 9s should get you promoted quick. Top 7 in an all 7s and a lot harder!9

My advice get out before the ship sinks, the tipping point for intel has passed!

Few will finish there career at intel!

No one really answered your question. I think the typical promotion time at Intel is 3-5 years, and if it is taking much longer for you to do that, your days are numbered.

Believing you are special and reality are completely different. IF you really are as good as you say you are, you wouldn't be posting this question on this board asking if you should leave intel.

You would be already at Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc, enjoying your new found freedom.

The fact you aren't, says... you aren't special....maybe special olympics special.

Get over yourself OP. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is always replaceable.

The system does what it is designed to do, which is create a very competitive, internal environment. You have to figure out how to be outstanding. What is your manager and his manger looking for? Figure it out and do it, then hold them accountable if you aren't recognized for doing it. You have to get a a bit bold and pushy with your man agent chain if you want it happen quickly. Tell them what you want, then make things happen. If the don't promote you, then leave.

If you belive that you are truly outstanding, and intel just doesn't recognize it, then you should definitely go through the trouble of moving out of state. And if a quick ascent is your goal, then go get a job at Google or Amazon where they quickly promote special snowflakes.

OP, I have a colleague who's not capable, but he's really good at politics and networking. It took him a long time to get to level 8, but when he got to level 8, he figured out the game and he started playing it. He's very close with many of the top guys, FSM guys, MIT guys, ATM guys, he's closely linked to DO, BK's long time trusted lieutenant. His rise from level 8 to IT Director for Malaysia site was very fast, in just few short years. He entertains, drinks and cycles with many of the top guys. Even CoC cases were quickly closed with no action taken. So if you wanna move up fast, you need to play the game! Intel today is not about what you can do, but who you are buddies with!

I have been promoted every 18 to 24 month. Some of it is i took time off for a MBA, which slowed one promo to 33 months, Intel paid for MBA.

Basicly on rotation learn one area, then move. Love this place.

Departure of capable people will help the oldies/waste stay longer at Intel. Right now, oldies/waste life is on the line of either getting a ISP, VSP or ERP.

Oh, you're outstanding? I guess you failed to notice but there are 99,000 other employees at Intel that insist they are also outstanding. Either get over yourself or move on.
