I am sorry Follett

How will we ever compete against Amazon. I have two kids in college, a Follett employee and it is cheaper for me to get my textbooks from Amazon. This is just icing on the cake. Maybe if my kids got financial aid it may persuade us to shop the school store but is there any other reason to? Wait in the long lines, pay more ? If Follett has taught me anything, it is do what is right for me, just like the company does.

Amazon Announces a Card That's Almost too Good to Be True

Earlier today Amazon announced its new Prime card, a credit card with no fee, ordinary interest and a whopping 5% cash back on Amazon purchases.

This was the worst rush ever. We didn't have long lines, online orders where half what they were last Spring. Students are afraid to go to school in Illinois because of budget concerns. Illinois better fix this sh-- or we are all going to lose.

What?!? Follett took away discounts? Wow. They have taken a turn for the crapper! Years ago you can buy your books for nearly 75-95% off. We would fill out a form get a message if the book was not avail. Granted these were used books. But it was a perk

Also, education for the kids was covered! Holy cow. What happened to Follett? Please tell me they did not put some foreigners in leadership.

Relationships with professors (many of whom are writers) used to matter. Follett canned people who cared enough to know their campus' writers. Getting the know the students is a great value add. However, mom and dad won't consider that a value add. They're the real client here. Nope, no value add in texts any longer. Better hire a VP to consider that and lay off 20 employees to pay for it.

My relatives ask me to buy textbooks for their students in college and I tell them that there is no discount for Follett employees and point them to Amazon as well. Textbook=commodity. #crookedFolletts

Follett is now trying to dramatically change its business model but it's a case of far too little, way too late. Stick around only if close to retirement or you're making enough to justify the potential future damage to your career (although upcoming layoffs may make the decision for you).

If the books are the same, where is the value add that would cause you to buy the book from follett? There maybe some value to freshman students who are living on campus. Other than that, there is very little value in exchange for the higher price.

Textbooks in general are slowly going away. They'll be replaced with a "marketplace" where teachers can sell / buy course materials and students can purchase supplemental learning materials instead. The writing is on the wall, you just have to see it.
