Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Fast Eddie will affect more jobs than just Sears/Kmart

Sears Holding Corp. (SHLD) is on the brink of disaster.

As a result, there is major risk -- to companies with exposure to the once iconic retailer. if Sears goes out of business -- potentially likely within the next three years -- it will make global headlines and there will be major moves of exposed companies.

Loser: Appliance Makers

Instant losers if Sears goes under will include Whirlpool (WHR) and Samsung. Not only will each lose a major distribution channel, but will have to endure months of their brand being cheapened due to close-out sales.

Loser: Clothing Manufacturers

Step right up and pick your loser. Carter's ( CRI) (baby clothes), Skechers ( SKX)

and Wolverine Worldwide (work boots) are some of the most exposed clothing retailers to Sears.

Loser: Lands' End

One of the biggest losers from a potential Sears demise. Lands' End had 219 shops in Sears as of the third quarter ended Oct. 28. Those shops collectively had a brutal three months. Sales in the company's retail segment, which mostly comprises its Sears shops and its own retail stores, plunged 15.2% from the prior year to to $39.3 million. The Sears business now makes up about 14% of Lands' End's overall sales. All of that will vanish.

Loser: Electronics Industry

Using the fallout from Circuit City's bankruptcy as an example, Sears going under could really depress prices for Microsoft ( MSFT) computers, tech accessories more broadly and large-screen TVs from a Samsung. As a result, this not only presents risk to the manufacturers but also to Best Buy ( BBY) -- it may lose business as people shop for closeout deals at Sears

Loser: Fitness Equipment Sellers

Sears claims it's the largest fitness equipment seller in the United States (nothing to be proud of, as people are spending more to exercise in boutique classes and in discount gyms such as Planet Fitness ( PLNT) ). When Sears goes bust, it could weigh on D--k's Sporting Goods ( DKS) exercise business for several quarters. To D--k's credit, in recent years it has reduced its floor space dedicated to exercise equipment.

Loser: Outdoor Furniture, Lawn Equipment Sellers

Discounting both at Sears and Kmart on outdoor patio equipment could hurt Home Depot ( HD) and Lowe's ( LOW) in the near term. The same logic applies to the tool business and lawnmowers.

Loser: Dollar Stores

Should Kmart go under, it may be a short-term disruption to the dollar stores such as Dollar Tree ( DLTR) and grocery stores. Low-income families will try to buy closeout deals on food and other staples at Kmart

Loser: Toy Makers

Hasbro ( HAS) , Mattel ( MAT) and Jakks Pacific ( JAKK) (more so Jakks) will be losers if Kmart vanishes. As a result of the liquidation sales, Toys R' Us -- which in its own right continues to battle the shift to online shopping -- could be harmed.

This thing has been spooling down for years.

Market share will turn into market shift, and someone will pick up the product demand of the retailer that is gone.

Downsides will be more real estate gathering dust; thousands of employees searching for work who were underemployed anyhow, and a pension that is depending on the value of the assets that were assigned to compensate it in case of bankruptcy.

The only winner is shopping malls. Why? Because they'll see an increase in foot traffic when a Sears is closing down.

I'm just not buying it! A Home Depot near my Kmart store does more on a bad day then we do in a week or more. PLEASE most of what will be felt will be the loss of employment and perhaps a few other minimal areas

It is a good point...it won't be just the employees, shareholders and pensioners that are affected. Everyone from landlords to trucking companies will be affected once it all goes down. I really wonder about the suppliers (likely the smaller ones) whose existence mostly relies on Sears or Kmart, if there's such a thing.

You're correct about Microsoft though, about the only way the Sears implosion would affect MSFT is the loss of future licensing of its products for Sears' workstations and servers that use MSFT software, but even then it would be relatively trivial. It took forever for Sears to upgrade to Windows 7 and Server 2k8R2 storeside, who knows whats going on at the datacenters.

As for MSFT merchandise, I don't even think Sears sells any. If they did, it would be exponentially trivial to MSFT's impact (literally!).

Another thing while i am on the subject. Lands end ships inside sears are failing! They are one of the reasons LE has seen a dip in sales. I read recently that Kmart accounts for 1% of toy sales in the US. Really?!?! SHC closing will have little to no negative effect on other retailers

I agree with the post on Microsoft!!! LOL have you stepped into a sears or Kmart recently, the electronics department is DEAD/ NON existent/ GONE. Also good sales at Kmart won't register anything, again have you been in a Kmart resently, the pantry department is an embarrassment. With the exception of a handful of super Kmart's and Kfreah stores, this won't even register on any level. Home deport hurting from Lawn and garden sales? Again LOL Home Depot had over 2000 stores in the US. PLEASE, they won't even notice it. Do some research next time and maybe step inside a sears or Kmart store.

Author lost all credibility when he/she mentioned Microsoft. Microsoft won't even see a blip. Doubt many of the others are very concerned either,
