@LSSPDSZ-3zul LOL x86/Atom ... glad there is such clarity of vision and failure for intel their. I see x86 did really well in tablets and phones, they sold like hot cakes and made billions!

Biggest mistake was to buy Infineon. Instead if a good wireless modem was licensed, combined with Atom to build a good soc, they would have had much greater success. Infineon has been nothing but a disaster, but all because of dogmatic management at Intel.

PSO was and MBA and had some bean counting classes. When they did the 1000 manager cut everyone had restricted travel.

The layoff of 12k was an empty ACT as everyone is spending and traveling more. Spending all the the savings... BK is bozo 🤡

Someone should take to task why BK is still not controlling cost and letting favored departments reckless spending! As bad as PO was, he did clamp down on the spending. But not BK, even during ACT he allowed the reckless spending to continue! MIT just had a huge party for its staff flying biz class from worldwide sites in Dec. Is it really necessary to have another party in Feb pretty much the same group of MIT staff flying biz class worldwide sites for another party?

@LSSPDSZ-3utm BK and Andy and BoD are a bunch of fools still drinking the x86 koolaid. The layoffs were empty as they didn't structurally change anything.

Sadly Andy Grove or Robert Noyce wouldn't have done such a shallow and meaningless ACT

@2omk, good points. Somehow my gut feel is that we are past our prime as well, but seeing many colleagues still flying everywhere throwing $ everywhere, I doubt much will change anytime soon! Somehow our management still allowing staff to spend recklessly! MIT, DCG, IoT are main huge spenders with little care for budget.

Remember SUN, DEC, HP and all the other high end computing companies most notably IBM who thought Intel with x86 would never be competitive ? But look what x86 volume and process leadership did for intel 20 years ago.

Intel in arrogance could never see that what they did to the process and product world with volume and cadence of x86 was the same reason that x86 never had a chance in mobile or tablet. Now that smartphone has powered Samsung and TSMC to process leadership and faster process cadence the ARMy is doing to intel what intel did to everyone else 20 years ago.

Just like DEC, Sun and IBM among many that made billions two decades ago to fund initiatives that were a waste so is intel now funding billions and will fail. Even intel with itanium couldn't beat itself.

The only initiative that would have saved intel would have been to embrace ARMy about three or four years ago and to have had superior processors or a process that could reallly do SoC to offer to the likes of Apple or perhaps upstarts like VIVO, OPPO, or Xioami. If they had, Fab42 wouldn't be empty but full running 14nm fab for intel full of the ARMy.

Now intel will make money but volumes are too small on x86 and profits while good on paper for shallow arguments like yours to convince investors and koolaid drinkers and BoD for a few years. The power of the ARMy and natural low of economics and large numbers sealed intels fate about four years ago due to PSO dogmatic x86 and BK is too stupid to change. Unlike HP or IBM which had other business intel will go like SUN and DEC as they have just one product and it is withering quickly while still making money for a little longer.

Tipping point is past!

You can't compare Intel with the has-beens Nokia, Motorola, ... they do handphones which others can enter the market and have a fighting chance. ARM or other microprocessors can't just simply enter the market and expect the same fighting chance due to the software infrastructure built around x86. For years folks have been talking about ARM server chip but it's getting no where not due to ARM technology being inferior or not due to Intel technology being superior, but simply because of inadequate software infrastructure for non x86! Desktops, workstations, laptops, servers will always be needed and currently the entire software infrastructure is all built around x86! That's the main reason Intel can continue throwing $ at groups like MIT and IOT which does nothing. As much as we all dislike, Intel is still minting ~usd60bil a year and continues to mint at that rate. That's a lot of $$! Come March AMD will launch its Zen which is expected to impact intel slightly, but from AMD's history, they have never been able to do much damage!

@LSSPDSZ-1zv Nokia, Blackberry, and Motorola equally big and dominant and thought the same about their position in phones and at least they had models coming out on schedule. How is 10nm doing ? Do the back of the envelope math what intel can charge for a "Lake" and how much it costs.

Folks have been talking about the demise of Intel for donkey years. Intel remains one of the biggest chip manufacturer in the world. ~60billion revenue per year is no small change! Intelliers continue partying and in parts of world like Malaysia, Vietnam, Intelliers continue to be revered upon! Even Intelliers themselves will give up everything to remain an Intellier! ARM's great but without the software infrastructure, x86 is still the king of the hill. Tablets are great but it still cannot do most things that laptops does. And desktops and workstations and servers are still needed for the foreseeable future. x86 remains very much needed whether we like it or not! Intel will remain the gravy train that it is for the foreseeable future! Your next laptop/desktop/workstation/server will likely be an Intel inside! No doubt about it.

@LSSPDSZ-jrk Keep believing the Koolaid from Circuit!

LOL, x86 is in contraction year after year. The anticipated growth from developed world has collapsed as everyone just uses a ARMy powered smartphone that connects to the WEB, pays bills, fits in your pocket, does everything your laptop does but last ALL day already. Kaby didn't generate much nor will Coffee or Canon or Ice when they come. But people can't wait to see the new Samsung and Apple phone as well as Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo. Intel has fallen out from anyone caring much, even at CES they were relegated to the background.

Boy did CRB and PSO miss the opportunity to hitch Intel technology to the next big thing. If they had they'd have 4 or 5 fabs the size of Fa42 doing ARMy processors. Instead they find themselves shrinking year after year, process technology tick tock, opps tick tock tick tock, four generation on 14nm as they fall behind Samsung and TSMC as they ride the ARMy to world domination.

Now you got ARMy coming on 10 and 7nm, and AMD as well putting a whole lot of hurt on the price leverage.

Oh let's not forget the Avoton disaster as well to ad to the 10nm FUBAR.

Margins will be in meltdown this and next year! Silent ACT and ACT was just the beginning of what will be a huge downward spiral as they BK desperately tries to hold margins in every collapsing business with spiraling manufacturing and development cost but smaller volume to amortize over. Simple upper economics or business sense that senior management in their x86 arrogance can't grasp.

Nokia, Kodak, Blackberry had a nice gravy train too, till it went poof. Pity the employees without a plan or ability to walk away!

The Intel gravy train will continue, x86 is still very much needed due to lack of software infrastructure for non x86. I would really like to see AMD's Zen kickass when they launch soon, always good to have competition in the market. But historically AMD have never been able to maintain its lead. Let's hope its different this time. Everyone knows Intel makes huge $$ from every Xeon chip sold due to its exorbitant price in excess of USD1000 per pop. That's how Intel pays for all its groups and staffs partying.
