I am a front line manager, and as every year, we had some Focal trainings with HR. And once again, we could witness the wonderful bipolar disorder Intel suffers from. We were very clearly told that BK has very clearly stated that there will be no minimum percentage for IRs this time around. But then HR always emphasizes that of course in any sufficiently large group, you will have a certain percentage of low performers who of course should get IRs and SSL4/5.
Hey, what? Didn't we actually fire those low performers last year? We did have ACT last year, didn't we? Or do we expect that magically, 5 percent of last year's good-enough performers will become low performers this year? Or did we just fail to rate last year's low performers as expected?
Ah, and of course, HR tells us that the limited budget will essentially force us to give SSL4/5 to some team members if others should get SSL2. So we're not grading the people (despite what HR keeps telling us and despite the SSL definitons), but we are ranking them. That's perfectly fine of course, if that's how Intel wants to do things. It's just bizarre that HR would never admit that.
So anyway, HR told us that there will not be an enforced grade distribution. And we were dumb enough (as every year) to believe it.
Then I am sitting in the first "calibration meeting" with my boss's boss. First statement: "We still need to identify the 5% SSL4/5 for this Focal round."
No forced distribution. Ha. Ha. And I think we all know what happens to SSL5s.
So no, there is no ACT2 this year. But the Intel philosophy is that every year, the "bottom 5%" have to go, even though BK and HR will never actually come out and admit it.
