Thread regarding Baker Hughes Inc. layoffs

Peter Principle

A concept in management theory which suggests that all managers rise to their level of incompetence.

Proven in BH where so many managers are useless, but BH doesn't get rid of them, BH either promotes them again or moves them sideways, inventing new positions for them where they are still useless but less of a risk to the company

So we have managers who have reached their 'final position, which by the Peter Principle is their level of incompetency. And if they have reached that level by mid career they potentially block anyone with higher potential for many years to come, causing resentment and frustration. That certainly describes Aberdeen for you.

It is no disgrace to know oneself. To know your own limitations and be able to admit them is a strength, not a weakness.

That is true because the company aren't prepared to confront the manager with the truth about his abilities and suggest he/she steps back down to a level where he/she was competent. So the manager is in his 'final position' which blocks others from progressing unless they are prepared to move 'round' him by relocating to get promoted. It is no use a senior manager in Houston appraising a manager in Aberdeen whom he only speaks to face to face a couple of times a year.

Management theories says that if a employee is move in a position that he is incompetent then that is his/her '' Final Position'' in the company.

The Burnett Principle is a consequence of the Paterson Convention of creating a new post for an incompetent manager rather than firing him/her.

The boxes in the organization’s hierarchy gets filled up with people who have risen to their levels of incompetency resulting in the failure of the organization. A great thought indeed! One solution is to set up cleaner procedures for promotions; A combination of training and personal growth education , assigning points for self performance analysis, and having more than one source ( boss) to determine eligibility for promotion by including other stake holders such as ” customer” departments, colleagues, and even immediate subordinates to rate the aspirant’s performance. Also it is time to demo the vertical hierarchy; replace it with circles of equals and the first among equals becoming part of the second circle etc.

The management theory related with Peter Principle matches very well the real world inside the corporations. Rather than seeking to promote a talented "super-competent" junior employee, Peter suggested that an incompetent manager may set them up to fail or dismiss them because they are likely to "violate the first commandment of hierarchical life with incompetent leadership: the hierarchy must be preserved". So, if you are too good you are gone.

In corporate world doesn't matter what you know but who you know. If you are part of the club boys, you will do well for a while. Everything have an end whatever it is good or bad. If you are very good in your field, better work as a consultant, start a business, write a book, deliver online training, etc. Try to produce an income while you are sleeping. If you can't produce an income while you are sleeping then you are going to work until you will die. The ERA of employment soon will be over, what we KNOW is going to matter. Don't waste your energy thinking at useless people, they have no vision, don't know where they are going. If you look in Linkedin you will see ex-BHI managers working now in Walmart store, however all the respect for them whatever job they are doing.
