Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Backroom employees: are you stuck unloading a truck by yourself?

I find it mildly annoying but not too terrible to have to unload a truck by myself. That is, until I have to find a way to move super heavy, bulky items (like lawn tractors in crates!) out by myself. Items that require at least two people to move out of the trailer.

I did that today and almost killed myself. The crates that the lawn tractors are on crates.that don't facilitate the use of a pallet jack, forklift, etc. without putting yourself in a precarious situation and leveraging a corner of it with a hand truck with one hand and sliding a pallet jack under it with the other, because they lack sufficient spacing to slide one under. Or, the distribution center loads the truck in a fashion that such items have to be rotated just to be able to forklift it out.

I almost fell on the blade of the hand truck just by trying to remove the tractor out of the truck by leveraging it. After about 20 minutes, I get it out unscathed. There were four more to go.

Anyways, hours have gone south and so that leaves a lack of coverage to safely complete the job. There is so much pressure to unload everything off of the truck by a certain time--usually about an hour--and it doesn't matter if there is help or not.

How many backroom associates are finding themselves alone to unload a truck?

The whole "Simple Store Process" has been nothing but disastrous for our store. Like most stores, we lost our backroom lead, as well as numerous others, two of whom were always heavily involved in the unload process. With the whole procedure of scheduling most people early to get freight out in the mornings, we have almost nobody left to unload trucks when they're here. Despite all that, they don't even necessarily get even close to clearing out the backroom, and so several hours will have to be wasted shifting pallets around to make room. Whereas we would previously have at least five people ready to help and could unload even a 1000+ piece truck in less than two hours, now we're lucky if we have three and the trailer will often have to just be locked up and left until the next day.

OSHA is not there for the business but for the employees. Yes, they do care about working conditions and anymous calls work wonders. ;) Our mouse problem sure got fixed pretty fast after they popped in for a visit. The backroom and fixture room was sorted and fixed so people move around safely after the fire Marshall popped in for a visit. How many times have we watched how to safely lift and run a pallet jack in our CBLs. Call!

OSHA could care less about sears, if they waste their time giving them fines, they will never get the money, they would have to get in line behind the 1000 other people Sears owes money to....

Sounds like and OSHA complaint to me. Also, file with your state labor board or whoever. Document everything, take pictures.

You might want to "anomously" report the unsafe work conditions at SHLD regarding the truck unloading to OSHA. I bet that they'd have a field day!!

All kmart cares about is getting that truck unloaded with an unrealistic time frame. Safety isn't a concern and they want you to work at 10 times the speed.

do not unload the truck in an unsafe manner. Tell the boss. He cannot ignore your safety
