What about so many VPs? Are they of any use?

I agree. Many of them are useless.
As easily as you can replace SLB engineers with fresh outs since SLB products don't really need years of experience, SLB managers can be replaced in the same manner with 0 impact on the company. They don't really have obvious skill sets, but are expensive to keep for no particular reason.
New crop of current tech savvy folk graduating twice a year. Figure it out.
You didn't know yet? They have a special skill to make them look busy and useful.
