Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Where Did the Managers Go?

Those that have left (congrats) what sort of jobs did you find? I am struggling with what direction to look. Being middle aged, not easy starting over after being with the same company for 20+ years.

I don't want regular retail, as the hours are not something I think I could adjust to at my age. Administration work, I feel not proficient enough with the young kids being so tech savvy. Confused.

I agree our skills and experience are excellent. Modified my resume similar to below and landed a job quickly. The key is to not under estimate your responsibilities and accomplishments. Good luck all.

You will be surprised at how marketable you are coming out of this company if you know how to market yourself. Here is my trick: The key is to find a job that aligns with your experiences and market it on your resume properly. Put the job description next your resume: Does 90% of it line up somewhat with what the company wants? If yes, then write a custom resume that matches key words of what they want but NEVER lie. For instance, if the job says they are looking for: Purchasing and Procurement don't put down that you bought textbooks. Put something like "was responsible for the purchasing and procurement of 5+ million in retail merchandise under strict logistical timelines". Translate it to their world and let the application software catch their own job description words. Don't be scared to look at the Institution World either.

I understand how you feel. Female, over 55, 23+ years in. Where to now? Was salaried over $55,000 and usually recieved bonus payout.

I am hanging in as long as I can, and searching while still employed, but just waiting for the next round of layoffs. Only a matter of time that I have to find something new.

Beinf in management at Follett I decided to look at positions in upper management, not the VP or C level. After a few interviews and the usual "we are looking for someone with a little more experience" I landed a new gig. After a few weeks made a comment about my old boss. Come to find out, he applied a few years ago with them and turned him down. The reason was he lied of his accomplishments and achievements at his previous position and was not management material. The only response was, well that explains a lot!

But keep trying. Keep going for what you want. Do the best you can to sell yourself

I lost my job at the home office and found another one in the accounting field despite being older. Do not underestimate your value and contributions to Follett's previous success or your stores success, especially if you have been with Follett for a while. Regardless of your position you managed many aspects of retail operations. Because Follett's systems and processes are so bad, you managed retail store functions at a much finer level of control than many other retail positions.

Keep your head up and don't underestimate your value and accomplishments that will translate to positions at other companies. If you are struggling to find a job, look at your resume and cover letter and make sure your accomplishments/value is clearly stated. Do not just list your position, ie "Store Manager". Be clear on how you managed, and most importantly what you accomplished.

Try to find an independent to go to -- they appreciate you come from a Follett and treat you much better.
