Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Be afraid be very afraid ...

Intel makes about $36bn a year from PC and $20bn from server.

Zen will launch mid Jan. Let's assume AMD can only capture 10% of Intel's PC business. That's $3.6bn. Let's take Intel's GM number of 60% (very conservative) then that's $2.16bn in lost operating profit.

To put that into context ACT saved $1.4bn with 12,000 job losses.

So when management delay the investors meeting. Suddenly close wearables or start visiting Germany keep this in mind. They need to cut about 20% of the workforce in 2017 at a very conservative estimate.

Virtuous cycle lost and when 10nm ramp attemp is booked in the accounting OMG

What is worse 10nm already ramping an 7nm from TSMC around the corner.

The only virtuous cycle is the one down the drain like Blackberry and Kodak!

Intel needs employee base of 70-75K to compete in tech industry, especially the profits per employee. Intel is not making the curve.

Intel's stock price is where it is because of the dividend yield. When interest rates climb in the next year and there are alternatives, Intel at $35 won't look so attractive. It doesn't even get a mention when the business press talks about the technology sector. That means Google, FB, Twitter and even MS.

@omk when going from a monopoly to a duopoly I expect much bigger losses. I was just trying to show people what a relative small change could equate to. In reality nobody knows but this is a feasible scenario.

Employees always think because a company is profitable they are safe. Reality is Intel trades at $35 today because of the numbers it reports. If Intel lose 10% of its profits it will trade in the $20's. BK will lose his lucrative job or 20,000 of you can lose yours. Wonder what BK will decide?

not just profitable, at least 50% more profitable than its competitors, conservatively

If someone had said a year ago that Intel will lay off 12,000 employees, people here would have said "more fear-mongering from trolls". It would have been considered a ridiculous notion that a company that is profitable would make such a huge cut. Yet it happened. And people are still being fired. So let's wait and see.
