There will be "selective" layoffs in WesternGeco in early December. Not sure what is meant by selective but I assume it is more older, higher salaried people regardless of their worth to the company.

It is true. 15 WG staff will have to go in Norway Product Development Centre. Everybody had an offer to apply for early retirement, about a week ago.
Based on your definition, they had those "selective" layoffs a year ago.
If WesternGeco have more layoffs then it won't be Houston. They have a lot of work. Denver and Calgary could close. Stavanger is in a lot of trouble. Mumbai is suffering as well.
