Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

NOV officials are also encouraged by the booking of two land rigs in the third quarter, including a high-specialized, harsh environment,

Some good news but which NOV facility are building these two Rigs ?

NOV Rig Systems received two new land rig orders during the third quarter, including an order for a state-of-the-art Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) rig for Alaska’s North Slope. This highly-specialized rig will be able to drill to 33,000-plus feet, or 6.25 miles, as compared to the approximate 22,000-foot, or 4.17 mile, reach of current rigs utilized by the production company.

Looks like its for Conoco Phillips Alaska has commissioned Doyon Drilling Inc. to build a new extended reach drilling rig for the North Slope, Conoco Phillips announced Oct. 6.

Anybody that isn't an idiot knows that a bearing isn't heated until it glows. The people responsible weren't gone until much later. They knew it was a problem & did nothing. Pampa management protects their buddies, just look at the management that's still here, I would name people but the post would be deleted!

Well I wouldn't worry too much about these rigs saving the bottom line for NOV. If it's anything like Sirgut or any of the other rig deals they've made during slow periods they sold it at or a shade above what they think is cost. Since NOV can't cost anything accurately and they don't actually make what they sell because Salesmen are clueless they will end up losing money on this in the long run anyway. If they make what was sold the rig won't work, but the salesman won't care since he'll be off to the next fairway or expensive dinner.

Well isn’t that nice, once again someone is spreading rumors that are not true. It wasn’t the mast bearings, In fact it was the drive bearing in the parmac assist brake. 1 bearing Failed in the field and was reported back to the plant, EVERY rig in the plant was checked and 1 other bearing was found to be “ overheated on in installation “. That’s when the $15,000.00 inductive bearing heater was purchased and the practice of using a torch to heat bearings was abandoned. It was a process problem not a personnel issue. The one great thing that Pampa does is care about the products they build. Look at the Surgut that is being built now compared to the ones built 10 years ago…TOTALLY AWESOME and NONE of it had to do with engineering or management it was 100% the floor employees that made the rigs what they are now! Good luck on building new ones as everyone that knew what was going on got laid off

He was forced to retire. He would have been fired, but his brother is a Corporate Vice President at NOV, so he was forced to retire. He knew the rigs were defective, he just wanted the bonuses for on time delivery.

I thought Renfro retired ? So Mobile Rig issues cut his job?

The masts on some rigs built in Pampa a few years ago had bearings that were over heated when installed. They weren't greased & caused the rigs to fail. The person that did it kept his job for a couple of years because he knew about to many other things. He would have spilled the beans if fired. It cost Renfro his job as plant mgr.

Galina park will get the larger rigs, Pampa builds mobile rigs. and to be honest if all the rigs Pampa sent to Russia was defective why do they keep coming back for more???? in the years I worked for NOV I had my hands on over 50 surguit units with the last 25 being state of the art rigs! and now we have a fresh contract for 5 more!
