Thread regarding Noble Energy Inc. layoffs

the future is bright

First, please let me say I am sorry for all of those Noble employees and contractors who have lost their jobs in the past two years. Without doubt we have lost some real talented people. It is easy to lay blame and point fingers, what is harder is to accept the state our industry has been in the past couple of years. This is not any one persons fault, nor is Noble the only company having to adjust its staff and the way it operates and as commodity prices have fallen. If we are honest with one another this is a result of many people and companies doing too good of a job. Not that long ago the so called experts were concerned we facing a gas shortage, now we have more gas than we can use.

Although I am disappointed not to betting a pay increase AGAIN, if truth be told I am happy with my job at Noble. I respect my direct supervisor and have a lot of respect for my colleagues. And although I may not fully understand every decision the exec's make I try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

For those of you that have been laid off and the trolls from other companies it's time to stop the hyperbole and come together as one united people.

God bless

Actually it does matter if mistakes are being made and you can't do anything to change them. It says that the system and the people making the decisions are irrational and you are best to find the nearest exit. Such is the state of Noble Energy.

Maybe not, but for now I have a job and am making plans for what I will do next. It does no good to worry about mistakes being made if I can't do anything to change them.

Hmmm, Let's recap: management takes responsibility for high prices and rewards themselves with $millions, then when oil prices are low they blame the market cycle and pay themselves even more $millions. Funny how that works isn't it? So when exactly do they accept accountability? Never.

Oh yes, and for the record 3bko it's not "lower profits" it's called losses. Add to that management is selling assets at steep discounts to try and hide the severity of those losses. Chop people, sell assets. Both are delaying tactics while they pray for oil prices come back up. Oops! It's not working! Prices are heading lower as we speak. Interesting how prices do that when operators surge production into a bubble. It's called Economics 101. No matter. They'll just lay off more people and sell more assets early next year. Great plan. Hope we don't run out of assets... or people. It could have been different if the execs knew what they were doing and hadn't squandered $billions on crappy prospects. Oh well, with no accountability they still get to cash their paychecks! Will you?

Gosh, based on most of the comments Noble is the only company that isn't booming. So the lower profits aren't all due to poor management?

Well... I am not interested in starting my own company. But I have worked at other companies. So I feel qualified to comment on my current employer. This is the worst run company I have ever worked for. Sorry if the truth hurts.

Why don't all of you who are so much smarter than Noble management stop whining, quit your jobs and go start your own company.

That facts are that other companies are in early stages of recovering. Adding rigs and people. Not Noble.. still cutting, still laying off and generally still in a state disarray. That GAP training sure was valuable!

What complete nonsense. The fact is Noble management built their business model on the assumption of high oil prices. At $100 a barrel and with an early string of good luck, not skill, the plan seemed to work. But that's just it, it only seemed to work. Every effective business plan has to consider the down side, especially a business dependent on commodity prices. Noble management arrogantly ignored that probability. Instead they over expanded, over hired and over built in an myopic belief that they had discovered the "secret sauce of success". They were stubbornly sure expansion would be endless. Then, predictably, the cycle swung downward. Any fool could see it coming. Not Noble management. They were too lost in their alternate universe of "Breakthrough Thinking" and were completely blindsided. The only plan they had was to panic. Sell assets, slash employees, cut, cut, cut. Failure. The fact that other companies were caught as well doesn't absolve Noble management of accountability. It only demonstrates that executive level incompetence is an industry wide problem. Bottomline is Noble management failed and not just once but repeatedly. That is not hyperbola, it is fact. Yes, have sympathy for those who were laid off and yes lets be united. United in the holding Noble's incompetent manager accountable.

The future is bright? How so!? If you believe that oil is going to $150 bbl in the next year then maybe. But that's not going to happen. The future of this company is NOT bright! Especially when you consider the management team.

Nice note but you don't understand the decision making process that got Noble into this mess. The number of BAD idea wells based on BREAKTHROUGH thinking was a major contributor. Add hubris to the GAP driven thinking and you have a perfect storm of failure after failure. GAP took the place of good science, look at the string of expensive dry holes because good science was diluted. Most if not all of those who pushed the good science have left or have been laid off. Too good of a job!?!?!? You have not seen what good work looks like and must have taken TOO MANY drinks from the GAP fountain.
