God damn, you guys. It's been 7 months long. It's almost mid November already. Obviously, I have been overconfident. There are so many unemployed engineers out here. It's starting to get a little depressing. I think I am gonna have to wait until next year to see if the hiring picks up again. It's horrible. I could never believe that I would be unemployed for longer than 6 months. Well, it could be a year now. I am not surprised. Sigh.

@3lit - If Trump runs a lot of the Hispanics out of the country there will be a glut of janitor and yard maintenance jobs that will need to be filled. You're a fool if you actually believed any of Trump's promises. What the man is good at is winning, and will do anything, including telling the masses what they want to hear. But that's as far as that goes. Just because it came out of that round hole known as a mouth doesn't mean it's going to actually happen.

@1szq. Well the press was full of that explanation (i.e., headcount reduction due to declining PC biz) so I don't think that was a case of "who says?" It has just taken a bit of time for the real reason to be revealed.
You need to see how many jobs are open for India and shanghai. I'd say out of the 695 it's about 70% of them out of country.
Who EVER said ACT was due to declining business? Who? You managed to completely miss the point of ACT if you think it had any relation to declining business.
@1xet - You're sorta/kinda right about all the Sr Admins. You're right in that a LOT of the more experienced/Sr admins left ( semi-patiently waited for over a year for a package to land in my lap once I became eligible... but I think there were more that ERPed vs. VSPed. I know because I was a Sr Admin that ERPed and was pulsing those I knew. Majority were ERP eligible, not VSP. But I didn't ask 100% of them so I could be wrong.
I wasn't on the VSP list (you can be on both and you can even be on the ERP & ISP lists at the same time).
@1xet : ACT is just a cheap trick... INTEL is in grave danger, and some "smart" moron (BK, most probable) had developed the strategy to get rid of expensive ICs, and to hire cheap RCG. It will NOT work, believe me.
Simple, BK does NOT have alternatives, at least decent ones, ONLY rotten. And this, in long run, worsens INTEL very fragile position, will make it even worse!
RIP, INTEL businesses... Well deserved! :-)
Time Will Tell
I've got an alert set on several job boards to notify me about any jobs Intel is posting. For a company that supposedly did ACT to do a major headcount reduction due to declining business, they sure are advertising a lot of engineering and marketing jobs. Also looking for senior admins, who probably got disproportionately higher rate of VSPs due to the nature/deadend-ness of such jobs. I think ACT was really a stealth get-rid-of-older-and-thus-more-expensive employees. A few of the job postings outright say they are looking for prior interns to convert to RCGs, or just plain RCGs. Some just have terminology that indicates they are looking for junior people. Whatever the logic, I think in Hillsboro the market for us older employees is pretty lean. A few people are boasting on this board at how quickly they found jobs, and ones that pay more to boot. I haven't had that luck. I've pretty much decided to just retire, even though it wasn't the best timing.

I bet there are 100s, if not 1000s of H1Bs employed at Intel US sites yet Americans are still struggling to find jobs, go figure why no one is doing anything about it.
I know she. I look for a good doctor I'll take good ole grey hair over some hot Indian / Chinese from Harvard. Frankly rather have the old fart who has looked at a thousand old 50 year old than some H1b who seen a bunch of them in the last three years of school, same when I hire a plumber or tradesmen, but I interview them too 😉
Unfortunately not all experience is valued.
If you did basically the same thing for 20 years and someone else with less experience (pay) could do it, then you're out of luck.
Skills and experience go up and down like the stock market. When managing your career you need to be aware of these factors and take action before a layoff happens.
ISP/VSP folks, trust me, good thing will come. Please prepare the best for yourself as a professional with good resume, technical knowledge, and interview techniques ( behavioral questions should be treated equally important as technical questions). I failed badly my first onsite interview as I spent too much time on technicals and kind if ignored behavioral questions. They asked a lot of situational like questions and I knew I did not score well on those. Don't panic, again prepare well. They are still hiring out there. But If you want to make the same or better than Intel, you might have to relocate. Good luck to you all. God bless you!

@1skz. I was talking to someone today that asked "Have you noticed all the out of state license plates lately?". I had I hadn't (I don't pay attention) and she said that she's seeing more and more of them and heard that a lot of people are moving her from out of state. I asked if they were all California and she said some, but Texas, Idaho and 4 or 5 others that I forgot (I didn't care until I saw your post).
Hopefully they aren't engineers! But what I have noticed is a LOT of treed areas being de-treed (is that a word?? lol) with no place for the poor animals to live which are being displaced in peoples yards. They are building a LOT of homes out on Roy Rogers Rd and some dense apartment buildings on Scholls Ferry in Tigard. Scholls Ferry is already extremely busy at times and will only get worse with all the influx of people moving into all these new homes and apartments. And this isn't the only area it's happening to. I'm not sure what to think about all this....
Same here. Hardware Engineer, Oregon. And Oregon s---s for jobs. I was told point blank. You have a great resume, you want a job, move to Seattle, Austin, Bay area, or North Carolina. Oregon has too many laid off ex-intel engineers. Of course Oregon is the #1 destination for people moving in..because of Jobs..go figure. Like I said before...Oregon the land of the PHD Barista. How long can this go on??
apply outside your state and be open to moving, take something below your salary range till you find your dream job
I do not agree with the other posters that say 50 no interest and no possibility of permanent.
Maybe it was/is my background but over 50 and 20 years at intel and got 5 permanent offers and stopped looking and decided after that.
For those older, keep looking, no question at our older age we are experienced and I would say very valuable to the right employer.
But if your skill is very generic and easily done by an RCG then you are SOLand need to reset expectations.

@KdRiNae-otz, you should try to find contract job. Nobody smart will hire experienced over 50 years of age as full time. Contract is the right formula.
Time Will Tell
Revisit and edit your resume and LinkedIn. Think thru what your best qualifications are and highlight them. Take time to customize it to each company you apply as well as submit a more general catch all thru the corporate site.
Be open to relocation and open up search to international companies

Thanks for the post, OP! I have also been without employment for the last give months. Have applied to many positions online, have attended many job fairs, have met with LHH consultant many times, have spoken to recruiters on the phone, without even an interview. I believe my biggest "issue" is age, and I have also found out through some industry contacts that companies are cold to lukewarm with hiring ex-Intel employees. In addition the very few companies that do have openings simply can't match pay (+ benefits) compared to that employees last salary. Certainly the market is very unfriendly to the experienced, albeit aged.
Don't give up hope. I put my resume on Dice and found a contract position with a local firm in Austin.
The job is a good fit for me and am glad to be working at a new place.
McDonald's is hiring for sure.
I'm not sure I'd stop looking just because the holiday season is almost here and hiring tends to slow down. I just wouldn't be overly optimistic at finding a job until it picks up, likely next year. But if you stop looking as a lot of people do this time of year, you might miss a good opportunity, AND have less competition. Just go into it thinking it's not likely, but certainly not impossible.
It's like what I've said to a lot of people over the years that tell me they've never won a contest. I reply with... 'Do you enter contests?'. The answer is no. I tell them you can't win if you don't apply. I mean... hello!! lol (at them, not at you).
