Thread regarding Marriott layoffs

Marriott Int cutting UK staff NOW November 2016

Had a phone call from a long time friend and former co-worker last night saying that the whole of the uk arm of Marriott have had notice of 1000 job losses to begin next week.

Sales/Marketing, GM's, senior Directors and Excom members are all facing redundancy in the name of 'streamlining' the uk operation.

All workers are effected not just the Executive level as the official press release statement described.

My former co-worker is devastated. six weeks before the holidays and they are facing the prospect of being out of work after 20+ years at the same property. They are not alone either, they told me that all of the team members are having to reapply for a third of the original positions now available. This is being replicated throughout the UK in every property, in every sector. Field and property based alike.

They have been informed that this streamlining is not connected or as a result of the Starwood acquisition or the $200 million efficiency savings that are already underway across the US in any way.

From their dealings and conversations with other properties in the UK, their opinion is that moral and job satisfaction has plummeted already and has reached an all time low. Seems that what Marriott had stood for is no longer and it has now become just plain greedy. Their feeling is that the job losses will need to be done before 01/01/17 to allow for the 'savings' to hit the yearly forecast to bolster investor confidence. Not sure the 1000 UK families affected right before the holidays will feel the same way.

Terrible way to treat a loyal and dedicated work force and with little or no support or actual information reaching those affected, it seems that the attention to detail that Marriott was world renound for is a thing of the past.

Will post more as I hear it.

This all started before the merger, it started back in 2009, when they made my position of Conference and Banqueting Manager redundant after 10 years loyal service and doing 14 hours hifts for an 8 hour a day salary, loyalty counts for nothing now and The Marriott world is dieing in the UK

Putting people first - bloody hypocrites! All process is just a shambles! Profit and greed that's what Marriott puts first these days.

Shame on you Marriott!

There's streamlining and then there's picking the very flesh off the bones of your UK hotels leaving nothing but a skeletal staff to run delapidated hotels.

Further to the original post, it is now turning into a facsimile of Lord of the Flies.

Colleague turning against colleague, zero communication from up on high, productivity through the floor and all because the team members have no clue as to who will be staying. Recent information is that team positions at the smaller properties will not be guaranteed a position in the 'streamlined' organisational structure and that the positions will be offered out to other properties 'more valued' colleagues.

This is deeply disturbing as now it seems to my former co-worker that it has become a witch hunt.

GM's, Excom, everyone that has had an 'issue' previously with the greed of this once proud company is fair game.

Number of sickness days has risen already across the UK arm as once proud and diligent workers try to come to terms with being thrown out of positions to potentially be replaced by younger, less experienced and most importantly less expensive to employ college grad's.

Really does sound like the core teams of the UK properties are being ripped out and discarded all in the name of profit.

So very sad but not entirely unexpected from the aggressive cost cutting business model now championed by Int.

Being the biggest hotel chain in the world is a great achievement however not being able to run them all at a standard they should be at is disappointing. I would certinatly like to be treat like I do when I go to Dubai Marriott and be treat with respect with world class decor and atmosphere not come to a hotel in the UK and be given aldi meals at a high price. I can eat that type of food at home and don't get me started on he buildings they are overly dated and just look depressing inside. Hardly the livley atmosphere like other hotels across the globe.

Really disappointing as I have visited loads of Marriott hotels over the world and can tell you all are SO different in many ways.

After hearing this and being a elite member, out of principle I am no longer going to use the Marriott brand.

Once you have lost a customer, they won't come back!

I too work for Marriott and have watched them 'starve' the UK properties of investment, sell out their housekeeping staff to ineffectual companies and now deprive their loyal, long serving staff of a livelihood. Very poor show from a company who stated that they put people first; seems money and greed is more important.

I work for the Marriott in the UK and can only tell you that it is by far the worst decision they have made. They will run their buildings into the ground and ruin the customer experience in many ways.
