Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Quitting process

Hi everyone, I'm planning to leave Intel, had some questions regarding the best quitting procedure. I'm not sure what exact steps to follow, because (somehow, magically) my manager is in a different site, and I haven't seen / spoken to him for a full year now. Also, before anyone mentions it, yes I am planning to make my last day after Dec 31 so I can get the bonus :D

-- do I have to give 2 weeks notice? If I only give 1 week, or 0 days notice, will it impact me in someway, for example my APB bonus?

-- besides my manager, what other people / departments / HR should I inform?

-- any other suggestions? anything I haven't thought of?

Thank you.

If you just dont show up it will likely take 1 to 24 months before they notice. When they call justsay itis time forme to resign. They may even reward you witha package. Good strategy.

I quit on Monday, Jan 4th 2016, the first business day of the year after New Year's. I did not know she was going to be OOP. I just IM'd her and said I wanted to talk and quit over the phone....LOL!!! They walked me out the next day as my manager was OOP that day.

If you have decided to quit then do it on Jan 2nd, 2017. You should be fine. They'll take care of everything. Just take all your personal belongings from your desk over the weekend. Sanitize your computer. There is a Leaving Intel website. There is a checklist of what you need to do. Do all that before you talk to your manager. All the best to you.

Regarding sabbaticals, it's fine to take one and leave when you come back. They'd prefer you not to, obviously, but once you earn one it's yours. I used to believe the lore of sabbaticals, and how "they" control them, but really you do. It's yours.

That's a good thought. Instead of quitting, what happens if I just don't show up for work at Intel? I may just log on from home every day to check my work email and pretend that I am WFH. I may get more $$ from Intel by the time they find out and fire me versus giving 2 weeks notice.

I am in similar situation as OP. Will Intel or my new employer know if I am on payroll for 2 companies? Nobody at Intel will noticed for a while if I do not show up at the office.

Q1 😐 😐 😐 is not the best time to resign.

That's the reason I am ignoring the various corp head hunters at this time.

Usually it only takes me 3 to 4 weeks to get hired.

When I am sure about leaving (I will use the holiday season to think about my career &future) and I decide to leave - it will not be 😐😐😐 in Q1 !!!

Intel is an "at will" employer.

You can literally walk out and leave your laptop etc on your desk and never come back. You don't need to give any notice.

However, it is a courtesy to them to give 2 weeks or so.

@1qzo - I am taking 2 weeks vacation at the end of my sabbatical. I heard the same thing before I scheduled everything.

I was able to negotiate for Intel to pay for my sabbatical when I was ISPed this year, even though I was 2 months away from qualifying. Just be nice to the HR rep and ask.

@KWvhG2R-1ild sabbaticals and all other benefits are earned, no screwing here.

If I was BK, I would get rid of the sabbatical program. The unfortunate result of this perk is that it encourages Intel lifers to stick around even longer than they normally would have. So then Intel has to offer them VSP, ERP, ISP.

When they ACTed me they gave me my eight weeks.

Take your sabbatical and all your vacation and on the Monday back then you are resigning !

There is nothing wrong with taking sabbatical and vacation and coming back and leaving! Sabbatical is for recharge and reflection and you come back to realize how phucked the company is and give resignation. Sabbatical is earned so taking and leaving should be fine!

Good point @1qzo. I hadn't heard the part about them wanting the sabbatical money back, but I had heard several people talk about how it was frowned upon to take sabbatical and quit the day you return. I didn't ask for details so perhaps that's what they were talking about, or that's something new they started doing. Either way, best not to make it looked planned beforehand as @1qzo says.

@OP - the only person you have to tell is your manager like the ex-admin poster said. From there it's his problem not yours. Tough sh-- on whether he knows what to do or not. There are checklists for that that even the dumbest Intel manager can follow.

Wait till January to quit to be on the safe side.

They may or may not immediately walk you. If you are going to a competitor they'll walk you immediately, if not, they'll let you linger. Try to tack some vacation on to it too.

Also, if you are employed on the first of the month, Intel pays your medical for the whole month.

I myself will return from sabbatical and give my notice in January. I'll tack on the last 2 weeks of my 2017 vacation too. The worse they can do is say no.

Good luck and smart planning!

As some one else said. Don't do it until 2017... That way you'll get your annual and quarterly bonus as well as the 401K contribution.. if not you will lose them. Make sure you get everything you can from them.

Ex-admin here. Just tell your manager. S/he's the only one that needs to be told by you. The rest will happen as if by magic. Either your manager will process your LDO (Last Day Office), or an admin will that your manager delegates to. Not your worry. There are checklists to aid them so they/Intel has everything needed to process you through the system.

OP, I do not believe you need to worry about finding people at your site to process your resignation, take your laptop, etc. Just tell your manager; he will notify his HR rep who will take care of all the details. HR has procedures for this.

OP, shouldn't you resign on Jan 1st? I think December 31st is not going to get you bonus or 401k. The laptop you can return on your own. The forms to sign, collect badge etc...is really your manager's problem.

Not a completely true statement: People in Cali get paid for unused vacation days, others do not. if you are an "other" take your vacation days off first.

Sure, if you're exempt, that might be the case, but non-exempt will get paid for any unused vacation, sabbatical and PA time when they leave.

Backup up your personal files, scripts, programs, contacts, and emails

If you know any individuals who seem to be protected from ISP/VSP in your org from their own ineptitude (which can stem from being in a protected class, or someone who previously filed a harassment lawsuit and as such Intel is scared of them, or they simply have their head up the a-- of well-connected players in the org), write up an unsolicited 360 feedback on the person.

OP here:

Thanks everyone. However, my main question is still unanswered --- in my local site, where & how do I find the people who handle my resignation, take my laptop, and perform the resignation paperwork? My manager is at a different site, and he has no clue how to find things at my site.

Super decision, OP! Proves there are still some smart people left in Intel. You'll have a head start on all those other foolish people who will be groveling in some darkened corner waiting for Focal reviews.

Only person you need to tell is your manager and he gets the joy to do everything else.

I have an idea, you could make him even happier and do it after focal but let him know as he would keep you own and likely let you not come to work and take a long paid vacation just so he can give you the IR and take one for the team and meet his distribution without losing someone and you get paid for two more months and get the bonus too! 🤔😉

You can giibe your two weeks but expect them to walk you the day you give notice.

Download everything you need and want from your laptop as they will take it.

Pack up and take all your personal things from your office as you will likely get 5' to take your things

Be ready to send your farewell to colleagues the same time you give notice as they likely will lock your account.

By regulation if you are employed Jan 1st you get the bonus.

Congratulations on moving on befor the titanic sinks
