Funny thing is.. HP was considering a Digital merger around the same time the Apollo deal happened, but Dave Packard put the kybosh on it due to incompatible corp. cultures. The HPE you see today is Compaq in HP clothing..

Are you kidding me? Compaq DID takeover of HP. It didn't keep the brand, but took over the whole Company culture. Half of HP, Inc, and the full HPE are just the offspring of Compaq. HP's culture died in 2001... Everyone knows that... Where have you been during the last 15 years? Houston rules!

Digital killed Compaq along with the unwillingness to sell direct. Every computer Compaq sold directly the channel was reimbursed for a lost sell. Should have taken the hit for a quarter or more, gone direct, avoided Digital, and marketed why Compaq was better than the rest of the pack - BIOS, testing (all were true at one time).
