Re cancelling working remotely - weird coincidence or something taught at cost reduction seminars? Honeywell just did the same thing. Reversed longstanding policy of working from home and insisted that people commute to "nearest" Honeywell office. Don't think anyone was terminated if they couldn't do it, though.

Message 5442:

"I was notified last week that I would not be required in the new co-location strategy and would be released mid-January with a 1 month severance package. Now I read that Chicago has 77 job openings for their data center there. I work remotely but could commute to the Chicago data center each day and would be OK with doing that. Why wasn’t I given the option to do this?"

"Why is it so difficult right now to find out details about the latest round of IBM layoffs aka colocation move. IBM has made no announcements about this, but it is very clear that a large number of remote IBMers have been told recently that they have to move to one of the major IBM designated work centers or else they will be considered as resigned. The employees who have been told this are so far unwilling to share much information about this event. Affected employees would probably like to know more than they have been told so far.

We can guess that IBM has warned them about sharing information publicly and that IBM is watching all of the available public forums to see who has not heeded this warning. So, I encourage everyone who knows anything about what is really going on to be very careful about what they say and how and where they say it. On the other hand, it would be very helpful to a lot of people if the affected employees could learn more about the broader picture. Those that wish to be helpful will find a way to share information they know. They just need to be very careful about how they do it.

My suggestion is to use an anonymous Yahoo ID to post the information on Yahoo groups, like this one, where you can select the option to hide your email and IP addresses before you post. If you do not know how to do this, ask. Avoid sending emails to anyone. Avoid posting information on facebook or linkedin. You many not understand how easy it is for IBM to find out who you are."
