It's no news that TDK and HGST both closed their Japanese head wafer operations in 2016, combined WD/HGST has been downsizing a lot in all operations. Seagate is just part of the larger picture. A reference is all semiconductor NAND players have been investing Billions and expanding on NAND technology. Seagate had a good opportunity on NAND in the past, unfortunately SMT decided to go with HAMR. In the competition for future (or survival), WD seems doing better than Seagate though their very own employees had been victims. It takes a lot to be a winner like Apple, esp. from leadership perspective. Seagate is not. If you have expectations on yourselves, move away from rotating disks first. Good luck!

The era of rotating memory is coming to an end sooner than imagined.

The SMT made wrong decisions a long time ago to jetison ownership interest in Sandisk among others like Seagate Software.

Where did all that money go from the sale?

We are going by way of tape backup, the floppy disc, the type writer for that matter.

The technological evolution in our lifetime has transform society that people born ten years from now will not even know what a HDD is or a telephone booth.
