Wish I hadn't witnessed the sloppy presentations at Shakopee after the layoffs, but a mass funeral could have hardly been worse. Cold hearts from Longmont Colorado came in today and s---ed the life from the veterans of the industry that stole Shugart's, dream. Innovation will be gone and in its place will be the ashes from whatever they are smoking out there.

What presentations? Please post the presentations. They can't be locked up that tight. Not like the stuff in Al Gore's Social Security Lock Box.
Either you had been part of RIF this round or not, changes in the industry landscape are happening. Not much time left for most in HDD, whether you are an executive or a normal crew. Pick up you gears and embracing the upcoming uncertainty. We can no longer find typewriters, CRT monitors, optical cameras, Nokia cell phones ... anymore, right? Do not feel sorry, save energy to re-make yourselves....
There is life after Seagate, people. Good luck to you all. I was let go in 2009. Much better off now because of it. I heard 70 people were let go in Longmont. 200 in Minnesota. Everyone was shocked... They kept the lid tight on this go around.
If you are not part of the ol' boys network you are doomed to a similar fate that I experienced. Laying off an executive director, days before he was planning to retire, just so he can reap the huge severance package (two weeks pay for each year of employment) should be criminal. the salary and additional stock incentives at that level are something most regular folks can only dream about. The ol' boys take care of themselves and Seagate continues to hire more and more executives only to turn around and lay off more workers. They have over 100 vice presidents on the payroll. What company needs that many VPs? If you have less than 5 years at this place my advice is get out and find a company that is concerned about you. If you have more than 5 years, you should plan your next move because top heavy companies soon topple. The execs will take care of themselves and you will be standing in the parking lot holding your separation packet
Hi, all. I'm attempting to report on these layoffs (in Longmont) and so far having no luck in anyone responding to me. I need three sources to move forward with a story.
Please call or email me: 303.473.1626, castles@dailycamera.com
Sorry about Shakopee, but the technology is close to the end of what can be accomplished that cannot be done better by SDD. Its not that these people aren't talented, just that the future doesn't justify the investment. As for Longmont, they'll suffer the same fate when drive volumes really taper off in about four years.
Everyone is replaceable anywhere. That is fact, not fiction. What will happen when deep learning takes over? It will be much worse in many ways, but much better at the same time in many other ways. Any factory job including in the US is Slave Labor, no matter how much you are making. AI will take over the slave labor all over the world soon, including the US. The prices of goods will drop and will be much more affordable. Many people have mentioned Basic Universal Income. Yes I know many people don't like the idea and they think of the concept kind of like Communism or Socialism. But the truth if you really think about it, almost anyone that is working for a company would rather do something else, work on their own thing, or have a successful business. I know that is true, because several people inside of Seagate that I have spoken to all have dreams and aspirations to something much better. And it is not only true to Seagate but almost any other company. Even if you look at some of the other successful start ups, they all started because they were not happy working for their employer.
Most peoples jobs stink and are only good for the money, not because of the job its self. I am currently working at Seagate, and don't like my job. Many others have stated similar views.
People will always be salve to the decision made by upper management, middle management, or the collective of the company the work at. And most companies only care about making quick money of of products that are not forward looking things. This is most certainly true within Seagate when they mentioned "Cash Cow". But it is also true at most other companies.
Universal basic income would eliminate this completely and would usher in a new era of working on things that people really enjoy to do. By collapsing Well Fair, WIC, Social Security, Medicate, etc into one program called basic universal income would be the solution. As well it would be available to all citizens.
Another bonus would be that everything that is earned on top is kept.
New income = Old income + basic universal income.
This would solve all problems. As well non Citizens would not have access, which would eliminate peoples fears of illegal immigrants taking their jobs.
Generalizations seem to imply that Longmont is the preferred design center, while disregarding the roots of talent that has carried the company through our toughest past times. Someone had mentioned that kenny??,( or whatever), had a meeting at the end of the big day and made a group of many long time employees feel worthless with his less than compassionate presentation. So sad that corporate keeps him with a high salary at the expense of other talent. The morning after, another big wig from longmont bumbled through another presentation, stealing the accomplishments that OUR site has EARNED over its 40 plus years in the business. Best of wishes to all my co workers, past and present. God Bless.
Being part of the retained crew in the aftermath is as hard to grapple with as being among those RIFd. It's a grieving process no matter which side of the gate we end up on. And, the grass is inevitably greener on the other side (eventually).
Could you share a bit about what they said in their presentations?
