WD Seagate Merger 2017

A Non-Affiliated Visitor Post: Magnetic storage is going by the wayside. Maybe it'll make a comeback like vinyl, not. I'm sure WD & Seagate are in talks to merge, since there will only be enough volume for one company. Probably trying to decide who wants to be the CEO of a obsolete industry. Good luck to all that get to stay.

With WD owning Sandisk, there is no point for WD (HGDT)/Seagate merger to happen for a reasonable guy.

A potato is a commodity, the potato you dig out of the ground last year is the same as the one this year. Just because hard drives are priced like a commodity, doesn't make them one.

The digital merger is what killed Quantum. When asked what went wrong with the merger, the CEO of Quantum stated there are three rules to a merger and we broke all there.

1) buy a company geographically close to you

2) buy a company smaller than you

3) buy a company with the same culture as you

SSD's still have a long ways to go in working in the server environment. Data loss, miscompares, hangs, wear out. At some point they will get these worked out.

Anybody remember Quantum/Maxtor or Maxtor/Seagate. It's not about products, it's about putting the other guy out of business & the shareholders making money. FTC? HDD's are a commodity that no one cares about.

It makes absolutely no sense for the two companies to merge. WD will shrink its HDD as required by the market and focus on its SDD "Hail Mary" attempt. Seagate will simply continue to shrink. When volumes drop below a certain point, they'll simply close a drive manufacturing plant and/or a recording head plant.

They are not, and the FTC would block it anyway.

@(WD Seagate Merger) Why would this happen????????? What is the business case for this ???????? WD buys Sandisk which was the right move, which shows they want to transition away from HDD in the future, not spend more money on outdated technology. The only reasonable thing to do for Seagate would be to buy Micron. But this will probably not happen, since Micron is in a very good position as it is. Then again miracles could happen.

Hmm... I heard words from the street that STX (or WD) will acquire Marvel Tech.
