Thoughts?

"HAMR is the storage technology of the future, and will always be the storage technology of the future!"

Spoken like a true... albeit desperate, seagate vp with heavy investments in this technology. However those of us that HAD worked on it, KNOW very differently. HAMR, and its PROVEN limited laser life, can only lead to an even WORSE drive life expectancy for seagate drives.

oh come now. As we speak the Top Alchemists of EARTH are diligently striving to create the Miracle Metal that will Release The Plasmons without a melty point approaching that of Stick Butter. #GOLD is dead! And the Lube shall not suffer, nor shall the Wretched Surfaces That BEAR The AIR stay ensconced in their filthy coats of many Colours

Waisted 8 years on HAMR to see it going nowhere. WD flushed out almost entire original HAMR team and gave the ball to a bunch of HGST idiots. Unlike WD to use it as an insurance, Seagate HAMR is basically a PR for Wall Street.

Only Seagate’s delusional R&D leadership believes that cost intensive, low yield, high complex technology content, inherently unreliable technologies such as HAMR (in the “near term,” i.e., 2017?...or, is it 2018??...or, maybe 2019???), and HDMR = HAMR + BPM (longer term) will enable Seagate to retake the data storage industry leadership position it once had. Considering the fact that over the past couple of years (if not more) Seagate’s market cap has been around 50-60% that of archrival/nemesis Western Digital, it would seem that Seagate’s strategy for the development and commercialization of advanced technology is really "sound"....go HAMR !

No one who works on HAMR believes in its future. On the other hand, it supports a lot of jobs in the company. The RIF will truly be ugly when the executives decides its more trouble than its worth.

1) even HAMR is into production tomorrow, it can only extend HDD areal density following previous growth curve, nothing changes on I/O, etc. The battle with NAND is obvious to predict. If HDD management was not clear about it 2~3 years ago, they are unfit to lead.

2) that said, HAMR is not going into production tomorrow, unlikely any time soon, if ever.

3) Seagate used to own Sandisk (largest share holder). The leadership moved future technology to HAMR and exited flash industry (under S.L.). Now employees are suffering from those leadership decisions.

HAMR has been 6 months away for the past 3 or 4 years.

Due to heating, HAMR has severe reliability concern. It is much worse than the so-called cheap TLC/QLC flash. I don't see people coming up with a good solution to that.

In truth, the executives find HAMR to be a useful fiction that they can point to when investors look beyond the dividend and start wondering if Seagate really has a future. They'll need this as they start trying to figure out how to refinance Seagate's massive debt as interest rates increase.

HAMR! Hilarious. This will not save the company. Seagate will be for sale soon. Possibly Micron.

NO!!!!!!!!! They are planning to transition to SSD. Yes, I know Google mentioned that HDD will not be displaced for 15 years + or the foreseeable future. But then again it is Google, and like someone mentioned internally; "to them that could translate to 6 months". This is just like they killed off Project ARA 3 months right after it was announced that it is finally coming to life. It was mentioned at the Dec 7 meeting by the Host, which I will not mention names, that if HAMR does not succeed HDD market will go to Flash. This is a shocking statement. And I asked what is the status of HAMR, but got a response that it is almost there, but not ready yet. That has been the response for the past 2 years. Even if they could some how get HAMR working the Areal density charts shows something like +15%~30% increase. That is not a lot. It's not like 200% jump, so I don't see what most people are hoping from HAMR.
