Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Let's move on!

This starts the first day of my new work life. I have been making contacts lately and actually found a couple of things that I may be interested in. I may even switch career paths and industries but that's a long story...

If I could give some advice to those of you that stayed. The first would be to work hard, and make your job count. Be the first to take on new responsibilities and try new things. The second would be to stay off these Web Sites, and not get involved with rumors. You made it through all layoffs of 2016, so good for you. If you stick around these Web Sites it just makes you cynical and fogs your thinking.

For folks who got cut today, I wish you all the best and good luck on your job hunt, and for those that stayed keep the working hard. Make every day you come to work count, and remember, it can end in a blink of the eye.

Everyone is replaceable anywhere. That is fact, not fiction. What will happen when deep learning takes over? It will be much worse in many ways, but much better at the same time in many other ways. Any factory job including in the US is Slave Labor, no matter how much you are making. AI will take over the slave labor all over the world soon, including the US. The prices of goods will drop and will be much more affordable. Many people have mentioned Basic Universal Income. Yes I know many people don't like the idea and they think of the concept kind of like Communism or Socialism. But the truth if you really think about it, almost anyone that is working for a company would rather do something else, work on their own thing, or have a successful business. I know that is true, because several people inside of Seagate that I have spoken to all have dreams and aspirations to something much better. And it is not only true to Seagate but almost any other company. Even if you look at some of the other successful start ups, they all started because they were not happy working for their employer.

Most peoples jobs stink and are only good for the money, not because of the job its self. I am currently working at Seagate, and don't like my job. Many others have stated similar views.

People will always be salve to the decision made by upper management, middle management, or the collective of the company the work at. And most companies only care about making quick money of of products that are not forward looking things. This is most certainly true within Seagate when they mentioned "Cash Cow". But it is also true at most other companies.

Universal basic income would eliminate this completely and would usher in a new era of working on things that people really enjoy to do. By collapsing Well Fair, WIC, Social Security, Medicate, etc into one program called basic universal income would be the solution. As well it would be available to all citizens.

Another bonus would be that everything that is earned on top is kept.

New income = Old income + basic universal income.

This would solve all problems. As well non Citizens would not have access, which would eliminate peoples fears of illegal immigrants taking their jobs.

I was let go in June of this year after 9+ years. Here are my recommendations for those that are now affected by this layoff. Take full advantage of unemployment and any job placement tools Seagate provided. Take a few weeks off and relax. Take a vacation, read a book, do something to distract you from this. I can't speak for everyone however I found that Seagate was paying me about 20% less than other businesses in my area. I now have a better job, better pay, and less stress. It truly turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

I feel for all of you affected by this layoff, it's never fun. I was there felt the same thing as those who are sad today. But chin up there are better days waiting for you. Dust off that resume and before that take some time off. Go on cruise or visit a foreign country it will give you a good perpective on life before embarking on a new job. It's not the end of the world!

I did all those things and still got canned. Your advice makes sense for normal firms in growing or flat markets, but on a sinking ship it's the a-- kissers that get on the lifeboats.

To the guy who said he quits after 27+ years.

In my view, layoff is not a shame. In fact, layoff has bigger financial benefit than quitting. Hell, I want some free vacation money when I walk out of that door.

Anxious, fears and hurt are understandable feelings for those who were affected. However, if you do feel that way, you are either grossly unprepared, been there too long, you were contend with your job, bought into corporation people's value bs or all of the above. Let this be the learning experience. The #1 rule of working for any corporation is be ready to move on. Corporate loyalty is a dinosaur. Either party shall be prorated to leave at moment notice if there is no longer mutual benefit.

I have seen young and life inexperience managers stepping into corporate loyalty bs. They set themselves for a world of hurt when the table turn. Corporations only pledge their loyalty to money and so are we. (In term of working).

You get the job done, you get paid. It is a mutual benefits, no more no less. Anything beyond that is a fantasy.

I am a former employee. It's difficult to keep your chin up during these times. I have nothing but good things to say about seagate. Awesome people . Its sad that seagate is going through this. If it were the normal times i would've been back working at seagate in a hearbeat. It was like one big family. Saddned to see tco in its current state. Its was good while it lasted.

Working at Seagate was just one season in your life, but there are many more beautiful seasons ahead of you and the chances are that you will see your best season outside the walls of this office...
