Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

NOV Houston Incompetent & Getting Worse

Rig has become a joke. It's been going downhill for years but at least before the bust you could get stuff done and questions answered. The caliber of employees they have left are either undermananed or just not competent or the desire to actually do their jobs. Management is busting at the seams while they continue bye to layoff staff. Who is coining the work? Not management.

Hey be careful what you say, you might offend the manager that will let you go to keep their friend or relative, no matter how inept they are.

I know people are miserable there right now but doing what they got to do. Morale is at an all time low and there really is no incentive to stay so the smart ones are dropping like flies as soon as they are offered another opportunity. Believe me, everyone is looking for something outside of NOV and its good ol' boy mentality. That'll only get you so far. You gotta eventually know what your doing and have the mental capacity to see and read between the lines when executive pockets are being fattened while staff is being let go.

The original post is pretty accurate for the feeling of most people working within Rig. His grammar aside, it is still worth looking at and understanding. The three responses dismissing him are one of the reason's NOV is in the shape it is in and why morals and morale are so low. One would expect low morale with all of the slow business and lay offs but between Mike Matta getting away with at minimum hundreds of thousands of dollars in corruption and then the millions in fines levied against the company because of management decisions made years ago. Those managers and VP's that caused the fine and ran business away are still in charge and deciding the future fate now. People can deal with deal with bad news if it is fair and dispensed evenly, however that is not the case. NOV has always been one of the most under paid businesses in the oilfield but the "perks" made it okay. All of those perks are gone away now. Rig management reads this site and the responses and routinely dismisses what is written here as garbage or nonsense. The problem is that much of it is true and they won't see it and dismissing the perception by most of the people makes your morale worse the cancers grow. Worse morale leads to lower production. This is a real problem and with the exception of a few small pockets within NOV gets completely ignored or routinely compounded and made worse. Joe, Ed and the rest of the bunch sit in an echo chamber and here each other's truth. Sit down, shut up and take what's coming because your opinion doesn't matter. Get your paycheck and wait for the next upturn and leave.
