Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Utterly devastating

It is utterly devastating to see the heart and soul of a once proud MN engineering institution that was a purveyor of many great innovations gutted out yesterday.

At SHK yesterday, It was like a death in the family with many gut wrenching good byes (and some tears) for many consummate professional colleagues you have known for decades. It was a wake were many of the participants were the walking dead. Many of the best and the brightest of Seagate's drive engineering were walked out the door yesterday.

Compliment our management for allowing us to say our final good byes to one another with dignity. My tears and heartache started today when I woke up with the realization that I no longer will be seeing many of my colleagues or go to work at a place that I called my second home.

Now, the grieving process begins. Blessed to have a wonderful family and group of friends and former colleagues around me to lean on in this difficult moment.

The fate of TCO was sealed many years ago by Watkins who favored the Conner Peripherals management. In business, politics always win out.

They yanked helium & nearline products away from SHK sealing its fate.

It is the end of a great ride and an era that I am privileged to be a part of. To all my former colleagues, hold your heads up high. We've had a great career. We've done many wonderful things. It is a great pleasure knowing you.

I walked out of the building yesterday with a heavy heart, but I have no regrets.

Know, it is time to take the next step although I don't know as of yet what that will be. How do I retrain my whole being for a new chapter and a new job? I had a well-worn path in life of the familiar.

I will lean on my wonderful family, friends, and former colleagues for solace and comfort moving forward. God Bless to all.

Found this on another thread. I was so tuched, thought it deserved to be posted in new thread. Thank you, OP

Yeah.

Remember what happened in 2006?

In Longmont, after Seagate "acquired" Maxtor, they laid-off about 600 of the 850 Maxtor employees, onboarding around 200-250. As soon as they s---ed all the IP and knowledge from those folks, they were laid off in little trickles, so nobody would notice.

Back then, many went to Cornice, a little micro-HD startup.

After a few years, Cornice outsourced all the jobs to China, laying off everybody except about 15 engineers who stayed on.

Just wait and see what happens at Seagate after their SSD products mature a little bit. Since there aren't any moving parts, and the silicon and PCB fab houses are all from Asia, I expect a similar thing to occur at Seagate.

I'm a former Seagate employee, so I have a right to be cynical.

The HDD industry is coming to an end, might be a few years to extend after 3D NAND in mass adoption (2017). Those remain after this RIF would experience rounds of cuts in days to come, not much to expect anyway. Need to move on for all, whether you are still inside or being RIFed.

Everyone is replaceable anywhere. That is fact, not fiction. What will happen when deep learning takes over? It will be much worse in many ways, but much better at the same time in many other ways. Any factory job including in the US is Slave Labor, no matter how much you are making. AI will take over the slave labor all over the world soon, including the US. The prices of goods will drop and will be much more affordable. Many people have mentioned Basic Universal Income. Yes I know many people don't like the idea and they think of the concept kind of like Communism or Socialism. But the truth if you really think about it, almost anyone that is working for a company would rather do something else, work on their own thing, or have a successful business. I know that is true, because several people inside of Seagate that I have spoken to all have dreams and aspirations to something much better. And it is not only true to Seagate but almost any other company. Even if you look at some of the other successful start ups, they all started because they were not happy working for their employer.

Most peoples jobs stink and are only good for the money, not because of the job its self. I am currently working at Seagate, and don't like my job. Many others have stated similar views.

People will always be salve to the decision made by upper management, middle management, or the collective of the company the work at. And most companies only care about making quick money of of products that are not forward looking things. This is most certainly true within Seagate when they mentioned "Cash Cow". But it is also true at most other companies.

Universal basic income would eliminate this completely and would usher in a new era of working on things that people really enjoy to do. By collapsing Well Fair, WIC, Social Security, Medicate, etc into one program called basic universal income would be the solution. As well it would be available to all citizens.

Another bonus would be that everything that is earned on top is kept.

New income = Old income + basic universal income.

This would solve all problems. As well non Citizens would not have access, which would eliminate peoples fears of illegal immigrants taking their jobs.

We have probably walked by each other in the halls many times or maybe worked under the same director or even called each other by name. Best wishes in your new life, may it be fulfilling and prosperous. God Bless.

Everyone in Havant knows exactly how you feel....some people have been working together for near on 40 years in the same building....IBM -Xyratex-Seagate.....

All that experience and know how thrown away.
