I talked to some WD engineer. They said WD is keenly waiting for Seagate to kill HAMR. So that they can kill their HAMR the next day. Apparently the only reason WD is still in HAMR is because of Seagate. And their top executives are not a believer in HAMR.
HAMR complexity makes it a reliability concern. Also, not sure what customer would buy a HAMR solution offered by only one company. My understanding is that WDC gave up on HAMR, as they understand their future (if they have one) is SDD.
Well said, unless HAMR can turn things around (very unlikely judging by the current progress).
