It was known way in advance of the iPhone7 launch that the Intel modem was significantly inferior in both design and process tech than QCOM's. The test results just confirmed it. Hell, Apple even had to throttle down the QCOM modem just to keep Intel from looking too bad.

It is obvious that the people here who choose to believe that blogger have no clue about modem technology and LTE. That guy used settings that no network around the world uses. That is what I meant by "unrealistic conditions". Why should I have to show test results for my claim? That dude makes a claim, so it is up to him to go to a real network and reproduce his claims. He won't be able to. He ran his tests against a lab test setup that he could tweak until it hit a sweet spot for Qualcomm with BS settings. But no network is set up like this, because a real network could not work under these settings.

You claim I am a shill when it is obvious that the guy was paid by Qualcomm, and you choose to believe him. Funny.

Intel offer modems a crazy no profit prices and Apple and TSMC took it.

iPhone sales from Verizon and AT&T haven't suffered but the bench marks makes made the front page of many web sites and Wall Street journal. Very damaging for Intel's technology preception and pricing

leverage on their new 14nm.

Now Intel will have to sell their very expensive 14nm at crazy loss price to win the next contract.

Intel is nothing but diasaster after disaster after AMD left and they had no competition. All monoplanes fail in the end look who we got at CEO to appreciate what a mess Intel is in

Logic roadmap and process are late. Layoff bungled and all the new initiatives will lose billions before more layoffs are required

Intel had process leadership and squandered it all. Sad for the employees still trapped there

@ixq - Wrong, you need to get your facts straight. This is a CLEAR failure on Intel modems. : - IDEAL CONDITIONS ONLY - WHO THE HELL HAS IDEAL CONDITIONS? JF LAB MAYBE???

"Three LTE bands were tested: Band 12, Band 4 (the most common band in North America), and Band 7. In all three tests, both the iPhone 7 Plus models offered similar performance in ideal conditions, but as power levels decreased, Cellular Insights saw "unexplainable sharp dips in performance" in the Intel modem, finding a gap "north of 30%" in favour of the Qualcomm iPhone 7 Plus. In the charts, the Qualcomm modem maintains noticeably higher throughput speeds than the Intel modem as signal strength decreases.

This would suggest the Qualcomm modem does better in areas where the cellular connection is weak, with faster throughput speeds

Where does everyone get the idea that the Intel modem is bad? From that one blog post where someone simulated an unrealistic condition that will absolutely never occur in real life, showing that Qualcomm modems are better in that condition?

Beyond that, it has been shown that the Intel and Qualcomm modem are near-identical in performance. Get your facts straight.

Does everyone realize that this has backfired for Apple in a major way? Apple taps Intel for second source modem. Great, that is a good play, gives Apples some leverage and better pricing. Now..we find out that Intel modems are really bad. Now, Qualcomm is all of a sudden in the driver seat. Massive leverage since they can walk at any time and Apple can't use Intel. Intel really BK Apple...this is a HUGE blunder. Wow..just wow Intel..

@ece - Integrating the modem into the SoC is not trivial. Apple hasn't been able to do it, Intel will not do it anytime soon. Keep following your own advice and don't hold your breath.

I dunno, it's a curious thing. On the one hand, it just looks dumb. On the other hand it could be a production scale proof of concept. If Intel can actually fab the thing (instead of TSMC) along with some Altera stuff including the ARM cores, maybe they can finally put together a compelling SOC with Apple's A10++ onboard as well. That's the kind of hat trick they need. I've stopped holding my breath.
