I have had Intel managers who heavily relied on peer reviews for Focals. In these cases, you really need to buddy up with some people to write each other glowing reviews AND write negative reviews for those you are competing with for promos/recognition. But you have to do it in an underhanded way as to not come across as a Ahole to the manager receiving your scathing peer feedback.

re: It really has not a lot to do with what you write or do but whether your manager likes you or not.

I do and don't agree with that statement @1bdg.

I agree with it when it comes to long time employees as their manager has already decided if they do or don't like them, and sort of knows what they do. I don't agree with it in context to the OP's post. It's his/her first focal. This is his/her time to shine and 'educate' his/her manager on just how good of an employee s/he is, and help guide the 'likability' needle closer to 'like'.

Good luck, OP. :)

"It is not enough to just toot your own horn loudly. You need to exaggerate and knock others down if asked for peer reviews."

This in essence is what's wrong with Focal and similar ranking and rating systems: They fail to recognize team players and reward back-stabbers and people who steal credit. Just about anything at Intel requires multiple people to accomplish. To pit people in the same team against each other is counterproductive, especially when you KNOW that equitable credit IS NOT coming at the end of the day.

The management at Intel has been raised in this environment for years, has excelled at it (or else would be somewhere else) and likely has no outside perspective on the merits or demerits of the cultural dysfunction that it breeds.

Good luck with your first Focal. It really has not a lot to do with what you write or do but whether your manager likes you or not.

Do you mean it's a Great Place to War? lol

I agree with @K22hWMi-phy. It is not enough to just toot your own horn loudly. You need to exaggerate and knock others down if asked for peer reviews. Focal is very much like Survivor TV show, but much worse since it is done covertly. That is why Intel is a GPTW!

For a project on which you contributed and was viewed as successful by your management, claim that you played a major, leadership role that made all of the difference between success and failure.

If your managers are going to get rid of you, it's already in the cards. If they aren't, they'll go along with your game and throw the people who actually did the work that you're claiming under the bus.

I can't tell you how many times I heard our managers praising someone else for something I did. You look even worse if you try to set the record straight.

"Meritocracy" at Intel at its finest...

Only things you need to do are kiss your manager a$$ and make yourself look good by throwing others under the bus. This has worked for me for the last 5+ years.

Fool. Nobody reads this crap. Its all a negotiation involving your managers. If you are lumped into the crowd with your manager you are safe. If he/she views you as expendable due to tasks, need, personality, relationship - you will be thrown under the bus and lumped with the "don't cares". If another manager fights harder for his/her "don't cares" you will lose.

Better to concentrate on pleasing your boss or licking their boots. Discard anything you like to do or view as more important and jump to whatever your boss thinks is important and make sure you praise yourself often in the 1:1s. Seriously.

A real answer.... Strengths and weaknesses are just another chance to showcase accomplishment. For example, you accomplished something but is not "significant" enough to make a main accomplishment you make a strength. For example, performance to schedule - and talk about the things you delivered on time. Teamwork- give multiple examples of helping others.

For weaknesses, same idea but different. Focus not on weakness but development. For example, leadership - showing this skill by doing xyz, but take it up a notch by expanding into a new area.

You can write whatever you want. It won't matter since the lying, scumbag management at this hell hole had already made up their minds who will be out.
