Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Warning to those under 40!

Get out while you can- Honeywell is well known for tricks to get rid of its senior aka higher paid and loyal employees. No matter how valuable you think you are. Case in point: 20+ years never a bad review. 55 years old. Always placed in box 2 or better. All of a sudden they will place you on a project completely out of your field. I.E. A software principle engineer is all of a sudden assigned the task of figuring out the financial budget- for the upcoming year- for not just his department but everyone's department under his managers manager. You work your butt off, floundering a bit but finish and come in prior to due date. All appears well, everyone says they are happy. 4 months later you find yourself on PIP for a made up problem with the budget. In shock, you review your records. You have email proof of everything. You tell HR. You don't want to sign the PIP form, as you know it's a lie. HR tells you #1 you must sign it, it only acknowledges you read it. #2 they don't care about your records. Your managers managers story is all they care about true or not.

For the next 3 months you work 60+ hour weeks proving yourself, because let's face it. It's damn hard to find an equivalent job at 55+ years old.

I'm still here but after giving my whole career and being an exemplary employee I'm now on 3 years probation! For a trumped up charge that I had proof was a lie.

Yes I saw a lawyer. Not much can be done in an 'at will' work state.

Heed my advice. Leave while you still are young enough to have a great career path ahead of you.

Don't let this happen to you!

Over my time I watched many good people get unfairly axed. I should have left when I saw that but you never think it will happen to you. Until it does.

Good luck

There once was a time when there were HR reps at companies that represented the employees and watched out for their welfare. That is no longer the case and I saw it especially prevalent at HI. Their job these days is to act as more of a defense lawyer for the company. They work very closely with upper management and coach them on how to behave and what to say or not to say. This is a lot of why management can act the way they do.

Interesting - A very similar thing happened to me the year I turned 55 after I was given an impossible assignment that was a recipe for failure. I received a great mid-year review but my final review was full of trumped up lies. They put me on a PIP, made me do a 360, took my bonus away and of course no merit raise. I tried to fight it as well by getting a private meeting with my Director and HR rep and the lies continued. My Director even had the nerve to say that this was a growth opportunity for me. At the end of that meeting my personal HR rep said she had to back out of the investigation and assign an impartial HR rep. I met with the new HR rep (also brand new to Honeywell) and wanted her to look at the results of my 360 which showed that everyone; peers, internal and external customers, except my Sr. Manager thought I was doing a great job. I wanted her to talk to these people which she said that she would. A few weeks later she said the investigation was closed and no fault was found. I asked who she had talked to and she indicated the people who were responsible for writing my review ... surprise, surprise they stuck to their trumped up lies. Luckily for me this year's appraisal was back to my typical normal good appraisal.

I contacted EEOC, their response was the same as my lawyers. At will work state + salary employee + no Union= no case. Pretty effing sad. I am grateful for the good years I had, sad the last few will go out this way. I still believe in doing the best job I can, so when they decide finally to let me go at least I can hold my head high and know it's this crappy company and not me doing a slack job. I saw the writing on the wall years ago with others. Again, my mistake was believing it would not happen to me. For those of us left, we are all standing in front of a firing squad that keeps missing! Until they don't- I was management for a couple of years but took an opportunity to move into a more interesting hands on project- glad I did but being in management for that short time showed me truly how messed up Honeywell management is. Glad I got away from that in time!

To the original poster here...........being on 3 years probation (for something you didn't do!) seems like a life sentence! Hope you can hang on that long. Seems like an eternity, especially now, after being kicked in the A _ _!!! Hang in there. It's really amazing how a company can wear you down. I know..have been there myself and hubby has been down that HON route too. HON s---s the life from you (so do other comanies, but HON get the medal for being top s---er!)

The "9 Block" is a forced ranking system to reinforce management decisions. I hated mid year and end of year ranking seasons. "Forced Ranking" systems do nothing but traumatize the employees and put HR in charge of businesses they know nothing about. Can you imagine living in Phoenix and having an HR rep in Toronto that doesn't know you and what you are doing. It's all about making the curve look good. HR will say there isn't a curve but really there is. By the way suing companies doesn't do any good. You can't sue a company for being "Stupid" if they apply "Stupid" to everyone.

Live with the reality of situation and make the best of it...

At least I am prepared mentally- I honestly will be shocked if I am here till I retire at 65 as planned.

I believe you. Something similar but not as extreme happened to me and I was part of the RIF.
