Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I just sit and cry everyday

I am so sad. I cannot find another job and have to support my kids as a single mom. Kmart is all I have and its coming to an end. I cant hold back tears. We are all fighting for nothing. Fighting to make Eddie and gang wealthy while we all lose everything we have. What an awful leader we have ;(

To the original poster, you can indeed find another job. I agree with what someone mentioned in another post. Now is the time to look if you are interested in another retail position. Not only that but gas stations, restaurants, maybe even government positions are available for you if you begin your search. I too am a single mom. When I worked at Kmart, I too thought that I would never find another job. But trust me, there are better opportunities out there where you can be happier & possibly be promoted. Kmart has a weird way of giving people tunnel vision & thinking that is the best that can be done. The sky is the limit & with your retail experience, finding another job won't be too hard for you. Keep your head up, don't cry, & start job hunting. I feel you would be an asset to any future employer. :-)

It's hard to know exactly what is going on here without more information. But in my experience, which goes back decades now, no one who leaves these situations comes out worse. SHC is the bottom of the barrel for US employers. Minimum wage jobs. High pressure and stress. No chance of raises, promotions, or a long term career. Almost certain layoffs in the near future. Anybody who can survive an SHC job can do better. In my area (near Denver Colo) everybody has signs up looking for help. Walmart starts at around $11 and will hire people within a day. If nothing else people might think about relocating. All SHC jobs are now temporary employment.

OP, I hope you are reading the other posts. Do you live in a remote or rural area? Otherwise, if you're in a city of any size, SOMEONE is hiring. Retail, bank, medical, restaurant...I'm in supposedly downtrodden Detroit and literally EVERY restaurant and store has a "Now Hiring" sign in the window.

Also manufacturing is looking for skilled workers--find a government (or privately funded--they do exist) program that will help you get training.

What would you like to do? Do you enjoy retail and working with people? Now is the time to think about that.

We literally have people walk away almost every other day. It so bad we can't even replace them before more leave. 2 service desk associates walked away this week alone! Everyone who has left comes back to say hi or shop and they ask us why we are still here, that it's so much better elsewhere. See real have gone on to banks, and other retailers and love it so much. So apply and move on! You can do it! :-)

If you want retail, now is the time. Many will hire as seasonal, but most keep the good workers after New Year's. Every place that our store's workers have gone came back telling us to leave. Every place is more organized and easier to do than this one. And they actually reward you for your work with raises and benefits. This garbage dump of a company does nothing but cause tears. And it is also not worth one of yours. Keep applying, project a positive attitude, and someone will call. If they don't, start calling them to follow up. As soon as your hired at the new job, quit. This company isn't worth a 2 weeks notice. Good luck.

You are stoner than you think, and you can parlay that strength into convincing other companies to hire you. All it takes is applying. Look for open positions in monster.com, and apply. You obviously have the aptitude to be able to find a job, since you found one at kmart.

And don't just limit yourself to retail. You have one skill already, and that's perserverance. You held it together at kmart this long. You can convince any manager to hire you just by showing that you are hardworking and dedicated, and I am guessing you have that in spades.

Don't worry about finding another job. Other retailers pay way more that Sears or Kmart and if and when SHC goes out of business they will have more business and need to hire more people. Even if SHC goes under tomorrow or they close your store it takes months to liquidate and you can work as many hours as you want because then your store has no budget. When my store closed I made more in the three months it took to liquidate than I did the previous nine months.

Don't cry.

Get your resume together and find start looking.

Everyone in retail is looking.

And paying a LOT more.

Trust me. You will be fine.
