Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

No manager had the balls to go talk to its team that layoffs would happen

People I know that were affected by layoffs told me their managers knew a week before. Most managers disappeared from the office until the 1:1 with HR. They are not even good at firing their own people. The lesson is that managers will do nothing for their own people. They will go against them if asked. Big cowards.

In 2015, I was a manager that had to let an employee go for 2 SSL5 in three years. I found out about this less than a week before the message was to be delivered. The direction I got from HR was that we start on a certain day and no discussion prior to that. I wasn't going to risk my job to give this EE a heads up. Maybe that's a d!CK thing to do in some people's opinion. Maybe I would have felt different if this EE didn't deserve it.

To @Jsf290G-oet:

So a 25% paycut was discussed at the MCM level? I wonder why it was not implemented?

I still don't understand what Intel got from the ISP's in particular given the shoddy focal system and the way people were given SL4/5's. I got a ISP for changing teams - never got SL4 or lower in my 20 years at Intel. I always was an Intel die-hard - not even looking at non-intel products in bestbuy etc. Intel should be ashamed of itself in the way it handled ISP's with the no-rehire policy.

@oet being a manager is not only the happy part and getting paid. Managers didn't even have the decency to face their own people as part of their jobs. Lack of integrity is killing this once admired company.

@hwm I was burned a few years ago by a new manager who got challenged by someone way more senior regarding my performance and growth path, and because he was new in the role and a pushover, I got SSL4 after 19 years of rave reviews. The good thing is that I was able to take VSP in 2016. The feedback I received had never been documented or highlighted to me. It was very subjective as well, nothing technical or project related. Bottom line, if you're not working for a tough guy that can be an a$$hole and defend you at focal, get a new manager.

Not fun laying off people, it's gut wrenching....I know people have kids, wives, lives. Never a easy task, when u have to let loyal, good people go. Intel overall had great packages ...ps as a group no one willing to go to a 4 day week, or take a 25% pay ccut

@hwm People were played in the layoffs, this is how executives killed this once great company. Nothing gets done anymore. Period.

Thanks, OP! I had a similar experience. I had biweekly 1:1s between Focal reviews. These discussions always contained status of current projects, actions to take until next 1:1, training, and always some personal, friendly discussions about the weekend, wife and kids, etc. My manager would always end the conversation with a "great job" or similar. He hardly ever had any reason to coach me, that is until the Focal review was being submitted. Suddenly, other GLs said they had "issues" with me, or so he said. I challenged him that I wanted to meet with the people who made these accusations. He denied me the info and "didn't want any conflicts". None of these innuendos had ever happened, and I felt set up. These false stories went into my Focal to justify an SL4. Obviously, I was one of the targeted ISP by felonious GLs to save themselves. The same treatment was given to several other mid-grade colleagues. I asked my mgr about all the great ratings I had over the year, and he did not want to discuss. The extermination was set.
